Default Who knows how to disassemble an alternator?

I want to take my alternator apart but I hear there are connections soldered to the inside of the case and it's probably one of those deals where you open it up and little parts shoot out all over the place.

Can anyone help me out or point me in the direction of someone who can?

I would also need help putting it back together FYI.

Is the juice really worth the squeeze? The time and effort spent might be better utilized elsewhere.

I have no idea what this means.

I just want to have my alternator, bracket and throttle body powdercoated. Maybe someone knows where I can just buy one?

It's a pain but if you take your time you can do it. You'll need a good soldering iron for the three wires. And don't bust the plastic piece in the back cover that hold the bearing.

I did nothing to the windings; out of fear that since they get hot already... it might be a waste of time painting them.

as you can see in this pic:

the front edge of the windings (which get the bulk of the incoming cool air) stayed copper color; while the back edge of the windings look like they've baked a little... almost blackened. This is an alternator that's only seen 20k miles.

The outside surface of the winding frame... I did paint that satin black.

After taking one apart and having to go through the hell I went through getting it back together, I won't do another one. Mine was off a 79 Chevy and had brushes that had to be held in place while reassembling the darn thing. That took experience that I didn't have. I paid a alternator shop to put it back together after fooling with it for days.

Not being a typical Corvette Baller, I still think I'd like to try this. I just can't spend several hundred dollars for a chrome one. Seems like a nice Winter project, that's OK if it takes a few months to complete.
