I don't believe any citizen needs anything like that but I would argue and defend their right to.....even though I disagree.

Have my ArmaLite style .22 long for plinking and small game or pests. I like the looks, I like the way it shoots, and is a part of my weapon's inventory.

If you were into firearms, or shooting, (which you could be) you might change your mind. Set up right, they are a ball to take to the range. It is sort of like having a fast car, there is no real need, but we still like them. I do however appreciate your perspective.

This has pretty much been my thought to.
SO determined back in the start of the Obama administration
that she required an AK47.
So, she bought one.
My thoughts are still pretty much the same, but Happy wife = Happy Life.
I'm pretty happy in life.

While I understand the fun part, that is all I see as a good use for these
types of machines in the general public scheme.
Practicality is not so much.
But, on the other hand, ain't no one going to take mine (well, her's).

This .22 long Henry rifle does pretty much the same as my ArmaLite style .22 long rifle, shoots the same kind of bullet.

It's all about what you are in to. These arguments could be made as well.

Why do you need a car that fast?
Why do you need art that expensive?
Why do you need a yacht that big?
Why do you need more than one girlfriend?

Other reasons, because I can? I've posted this before, a very close relative of mine's personal armory inventory.

Need? Of course not.........
Want? Yes.......

Damn near everyone of those firearms will not loose any value, most likely will be worth more as time moves on. Has a nice tidy investment there.

It's so sad that more people don't understand that simple concept.

It reminds me of a favorite quote...

Exactly. I've never once sold one of my guns, going back well over 30 years. And I guarantee I could sell them today and be ahead - on some probably a lot ahead - so right there is a good reason to have one (or 20.) I priced a .357 S&W revolver I got back in the mid-80's. Paid $75 for it IIRC, used. Looked up the exact model on gunbroker earlier this year. One just like mine, in what looked to be not as good condition, went for over $700.

We have an 80's era Colt AR-15 that's stock, iron sights and all, and paid something like $250 for it back then. It's worth, idk, $1000 now? Maybe?

Well, I think the last one is pretty damn obvious.

The Colt AR is probably upwards of 2k.

You are allowed to disagree and I will not "make" you own a firearm even though one could save your life or a loved one's life. ( when seconds count, the police are only minutes away ) As noted, it is YOUR decision on whether to own firearms.

The 2nd Amendment allows me ( and you ) to own weapons. Our Forefathers had good reason to grant the right to keep and bear arms. Notice that "arms" was not described in the 2nd Amendment. The regular citizens could have any arms they desired including cannons.

My first AR-15 looked like the "evil black rifle" but was a target weapon. All the goodies to make it more accurate including being much heavier than a regular AR-15. I used it for competition.

I can actually give several valid reasons for AR ownership.
As Jeff stated there are at least 2 competitive forums where ARs are prime tools... High Power rifle and Three gun.
The platform and military caliber are particularly well suited to pest and vermin control like controlling groundhog populations or for coyote and feral pig harvest.
The guns are both lightweight and have minimal recoil making the platform an excellent starter rifle for new and/or small framed shooters.
Ammunition is quite common and priced well for a rifle cartridge making regular practice affordable.
Owning an AR allows us the constitutionally guaranteed right to face the government armed with essentially the same weaponry the army has should that become necessary.
I could go on but the point really is these things are good for more than just rapid fire against innocent civilians by disturbed idiots.
