If you want to talk about a guitarist that far exceeds them all then you have Allan Holdsworth.


Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa, Shawn Lane, Neal Schon and Gary Moore have proclaimed Holdsworth one of the most advanced guitarists of his time.


Holdsworth was cited as an influence by a host of rock, metal and jazz guitarists such as Eddie Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Greg Howe, Shawn Lane, Richie Kotzen, John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Romeo, Ty Tabor, and Tom Morello. Frank Zappa once lauded him as "one of the most interesting guys on guitar on the planet", while Robben Ford has said: "I think Allan Holdsworth is the John Coltrane of the guitar. I don't think anyone can do as much with the guitar as Allan Holdsworth can.



Jimi Hendrix for a short time could get sounds out of a guitar that other artist weren't doing at the time where now a novice can do it. I imagine 80% of the members here don't know anything about Allan Holdworth but 99.9% know of Jimi Hendrix.

Al di Meola paid homage to Django many times. Jimi absolutely brought the electric guitar out of the basement, and was more of a genius for thought than pure guitar talent, but there are many better guitar twangers. Jimi could never even come close to this...

Every genre has stars...from Roy Clark and Brad Paisley, to SRV and the 3 Kings.

Music/guitarists are subjective.
Clapton has what...grammys in 5/6 different genres of music?

Lots of great guitarists that has passed, and lots of em currently flying under the radar.

EC is interesting. You can’t underestimate the impact he had with the Beano album. NOBODY was doing what he did then musically or with his gear.

People are quick to bag on EC and based on most of his contemporary solo work I’d agree. It’s pretty unremarkable. You wanna hear EC at his absolute best? Derek and the Dominos. In all his different incarnations this is Clapton at his best. Unmatched.

I have been a Zappa fan since I figured out who he was when I was a kid. Visited an old buddy from college a few weeks ago in the mountains of Va, and we sat around sipping good whiskey and listening to Zappa, and a fair amount of Beat Farmers.
