Default GWiz final week at GT

Dear God, where did the last 4.5 years go? This is her last official week, I do believe she has 1 minor class on Monday, and 1 single final on Dec. 7th. 95% certain she'll finish the semester with straight A's.

I'll post the final GPA once it's available, but I'm pretty sure it will be close to a 3.75. I can't begin to express how awe-inspired I am by her achievements at such a challenging college. We'll spend the month of December looking at places for her to live, but right now she's very seriously considering buying a house in South Carolina. She's got the cash, credit rating, length of credit history, and income level to afford virtually anything she wants. If she ends up buying a home at 22, completely on her own, she will again blow my mind.

She starts her full-time job first business day of January, so she'll get to enjoy some down time (LOL) for the month of December. I laugh because she has so many other business interests that she supports. Her job permits her to work 100% remotely.

My heartfelt thanks to everyone on this board who have supported and followed her growth. For some of you, that goes back 15+ years. It's been a fun train to watch.

She's so done with school, and has declined to walk for her diploma. With COVID and Atlanta craziness in general, she'll happily just have her diploma mailed to her.

It's what makes her happy, and she's brilliantly talented at it. It just so happens that she now will be doing what I do, and this is the same kid who said "Dad, I don't want to do what you do".

Software has a much higher upside than engineering. Unless she got into management, she saw in her 3 years of engineering specific internships that the engineers can get trapped in a box. This kid wants no glass ceiling.

very true (the box thing).

when i got out in 85, i had spent the last 2 semesters writing code for several classes - some long hours to make the program run correctly without bugs, and I decided I didn't want to sit at a computer all day writing code.

different choices, different outcomes (so here I am at my computer typing away... ).

and as things turned out, my first job working on nuclear power plants only lasted 8 years, and then i had to somewhat reinvent myself and change to another career path (construction and real estate).

my 2 cents, which i doubt she needs: keep your options open, you never know who may call or need a hand with an interesting or lucrative opportunity.

A lot of the people I worked with in my career had that degree from that school. And you never know where that degree combined with the software experience will take her. She could be writing code for anything from metallurgy testing to HVAC controls, who knows? I do know that when someone sees a BS in Mechanical Engineering from GA Tech, they'll be impressed.

Well done to her!
Correct, nobody can take that degree away. She was all set to combine software and engineering for Schlumberger. That would have been her 4th of 4 internships with engineering firms. She hit it out of the park on savings for them....but COVID hit and oil prices collapsed. She lost that internship, but got another one in software...where she once again killed it.

She does truly have the ability to combine both disciplines to make something truly special. She took 80+ hours of an engineer's work at Schlumberger and cut it down to less than 2...through software. Her software would have saved them several million per year out of the gate.

Congratulations!

I know how hard she worked. At least I didn’t pay out of state tuition or room and board for my ME son. And it took him 5 years! I tried to convince him to take 2 more math classes so he would have a math degree too!

Yes. Both my sons bought houses at 22. No, we didn’t co-sign. Youngest son, the ME, graduated in May and bought a house in November.

If GWiz never takes another college course, it will be too soon. Regardless, congrats to your son for that degree!!!

Hmmmm, according to the GT FAQ anything of 3.55 is "Summa Cum Laude" which makes her achievements even more impressive!

For graduation with highest honor, the minimum grade-point average (GPA) shall be 3.55.
For graduation with high honor, the minimum grade-point average (GPA) shall be 3.35.

Is she taking her fleet of Miatas and the BRZ to South Carolina?

THWG!

Congrats to her! GT is a tough school...I did the 5 year plan and don't regret a minute of it (well, except the time living next to Techwood projects and hearing gun shots almost every night).

She needs to write a codec that wipes fakebook off the air, and when they go try reboot it, wipes the entire site off the map.....to the extent it's months to get it back on.....reliably that is.....

Damn.... time has rolled by. Very excited to hear she's ready to move to the next chapter of her life.

As a guy that's bought, fixed up, and sold a few homes, I'd advise her to be patient with a purchase vs renting.

I think the market will get softer in the near future giving her better buy opportunities and she will have time to figure out where she may want to be for a number of years.
With a rental, she can pick up and go and not be tied to having to sell a home first.

The other option is for her to use a purchased home for a rental but then she'll eat up profits with a mgmt company. (usually charge 10-15% of gross rent)
