Freedom Rider: Pony Rescued from Houston Storm Drain

A Houston police officer at the scene said he was checking a truck parked on the street to see if it was stolen when he heard something behind him. He looked into the open storm drain and peeked inside.

“I thought it was a dog, so I jumped back because I thought the dog might be vicious,” the officer said. “So, then I went back over and I looked closer and I said, ‘It’s a horse.’”

The officer said that after taking a second to realize what was happening, he started to think about how in the world does one get a horse out of a storm drain.

Firefighters and animal experts responded to the scene and sedated the equine while they cut away the metal and concrete surrounding the storm drain before hoisting the pony to safety.

Besides a few cuts on its backside, the pony seemed to be in good condition. It stopped to graze as it was led by emergency officials to a waiting trailer.



“It must’ve been meant for me to save his life today,” the officer said. “That’s all I can say.”

It was not immediately clear how the pony ended up in the drain or to whom it belonged.

The real bastards are the metal thieves who stole the storm sewer grates that would have prevented the horse from falling in. They drive around and steal the grates, then sell them to unscrupulous scrapyards, leaving danger literally on every street corner.
