easy, they carried many flags in their pockets.....so when the armies marched over their farms, they looked at the flags, then pulled the matching one from their pocket.....that way they lived....

Gene, interesting you put it that way. I have 4 g'parents from the old countries, Granther and granmer (on father's side) from Minsk, granmer on Mom's side from Germany, Granther on Mom's side from either Polish Galicia or Austria...(some confusion on that, most with an opinion are, as they say in German, Todt). All spoke Yiddish as their first language, Father's parents spoke Russian as their second, Mother's parents spoke German and Polish and second (and broken English as 3rd). Yiddish was written with the Hebrew alphabet, sounded like bastardized German and Russian and folks from all over Eastern Europe could speak the same language. In NYC and B'klyn in the late 19th and early 20th century, there was a very vibrant Yiddish culture in NYC.

My father's father got here in 1885 at the age of 8, speaking no English whatever. By 1929, he had fathered 5 children, became fluent in English ( his 3rd langauge), started a small business that got the family through the depression and, tragically to me, died at 65 in 1943, 3 years before my birth. Fifty-nine years later, my father still told me stories of his Dad. I was named after him and hope I did him well.

I am now his age...hope I last a while longer.
