Default Lifter going?

Recently changed my oil and had a sound that i never heard pop up afterwards. Im thinking i have a lifter going bad sounds exactly like this. It does not go away after the car warms up so im pretty sure its not piston slap as the video is titled. Any others heard anything like this? Just want some other opinions before i either start tearing it down or taking it someplace to get it tore down.

( i borrowed the link from CF forums)

Did it happen right after the oil change or has it been a few miles?

I missed the storm. I am in Iraq right now. The barn is one of the only public sites I can visit in my down time.

What oil did you put in it? Did you notice anything wierd in the used oil? What is the current oil level?

Its odd that it would show up almost over night with nothing more then an oil change.

i went back with 5w30 mob 1 full syn and a k&n filter which was on the car. current oil level is at the full mark and only thing i noticed when i changed the oil was on the magnetic drain plug what looked like anti seize when wiped on a rag. I didnt notice any sounds right after the oil change when i started it and let it run for a few minutes to get the pressure up and warmed up. After that the car sat for a week and then i was driving it to work i noticed the sound like in the video. It has good steady oil pressure at idle, no miss that i can tell with it being cammed. It's pretty much just sat since i noticed the sound, i go out every now and then and start it and the sound is still there. My guess its just a lifter that decided to take a dump on me.

Sure "sounds" like lifter click. Could just be dirty with varnish. get it to operating temp and hold it at 4-5,000 for a few seconds [ or higher] and see if click changes

If you start thinking build up it might not hurt to seafoam the car.

I meant the oil. Before you start tearing anything apart you need to find out where the noise is coming from. I can not see the video but a tick can come from dozens of things. First figure out where EXACTLY the sound is coming from. Then go over the side/area for anything loose missing or making contact with something it shouldn't. If you can pin point it is under a valve cover only pop that cover. If its to hard to tell get a mech stethescope to assist you.

Check the bolts on the headers, vaccuum lines, everything. You dont want to get into a huge shop bill or parts bill until you are positive it is needed.

yea i've pinpointed the sound to be coming from the drivers side number 3 cylinder using the mech stethescope. I've checked all the exhaust manifold bolts, spark plugs, i've pulled the valve covers off didnt see anything visually. Have not ran the car with the valve cover off. I've been thinking about it and i'll prob end up doing the work myself and using the extra money i would of used for shop labor for some upgrades while its apart.

So run it with the cover off. Just lay down some thing to keep the oil from making a mess. A dead lifter will be obvious there will be little to no oil coming out of push rod at the rocker.

got the driver side cover off and started it little to no oil came out of the exhaust valve pushrod on number 3 cylinder. guess its time to take it apart. Going to do some upgrades while its apart, upgrading to roller rockers worth it? Other upgrades im going to do are long tubes catted xpipe, 1/4 ceramic coated tunnel plate, rsd c6 snap shifter, new wires and plugs, halltech stinger intake. Thinking about some heads but not sure even tho now would be a good time to upgrade since im pulling the heads off.

Well crap... sounds like you've pinpointed the issue. I had Yella Terra ultralights on it at one point. They're nice pieces, but many tuners swear by the stockers or the stockers with a trunion upgrade because they're so light.

As for lifters I think the popular replacement are OEM LS7 units. No need to go nuts with anyhting aftermerekt. For a bit the popular unit was Cadillac racing lifters, but not sure if those are still available.

yea i read about sending off the stock rockers to harland sharp for the upgrade which i might do, and yea from what im reading the lifters have all been replaced to the LS7 units. Some company's still offer the cadillac racing lifters but i'll probably just stick with the LS7 ones. Thinking i may also just get some new pushrods im sure it wouldnt hurt. lol

The pushrods are hardened ones that came with the cam kit... no need to waste your mone on new ones. If you want to check them take them out and roll them on a glass table to make sure they don't wobble any.
