Under a new law, taxi drivers in New York City are no longer required to speak English. It supposedly will help immigrants get jobs. Currently taxi drivers in NYC come from 167 Countries.

Many critics are outraged. What do you think of this?

So how are you supposed to tell the driver where you want to go if he/she does not speak English?

If robots could drive cabs in NYC, they'd allow it, as humans are obsolete, other than to drive the car.
There are credit card machines in the back that you just swipe to pay, tip and then get out.
Other than telling him where you're going, that's it. You can also type where you're going if you want zero interaction.
That being said, they are from 167 countries and it shows. It's a gateway job.

When my mother was born her parents only spoke Polish. When the oldest started going to school they were never allowed to speak Polish at home so the parents could learn English.

They went from living in a railroad flat in the Bronx to a nice home on LI in thier lifetime.

Also Common language means they are assimilating. It's time to get rid of the moronic "Multiculturalism" and move back to the crucible of the melting pot. Constant pressure for both the dominate culture as well as for the new emerging cultures. What survives makes us all stronger.

There is some sort of Arab in the first floor news stand with an English primer,book learning from the beginning

When you make exceptions like NYC to a change the laws to allow non English speakers to work as a cabbies we've done 2 things

1) Told non English speakers it's OK not to speak English
2) Lowered the profit margin for those who do speak English.


What's next. City employee not having to speak English?

So the first question to ask when a cab comes is "do you speak english" and go from there......although sometimes it's hard enough to get one to stop.
