Default Photos of deceased ....

Has anyone taken pictures of a deceased person at a wake?
When my mom died my dad was in the hospital dying,on a respirator and of course devastated.....I was not sure if there would be any way to get him to the funeral home.
I told my sisters that I felt I would have no choice but to take a few pictures to show him.....I asked the hospital (Hackensack Medical Center) if they could figure out a way make this happen .....they did and I didn't need to take pictures of my mom.
This was years ago so no need for sad angels etc.
But....I ask this because someone we know, states away sent us pictures of her Aunt in her coffin.....I was a little shocked.
My father died 6 months later.....was not a good year.

I've never seen it at any of the funeral home visits I've gone to.

There was, however, a screwball old neighbor where I grew up who used to show up at graveside services at the local cemetery & take a bunch of pictures of the attendees, the grave opening, the coffin going in the ground, etc. He showed up at my father's burial, and it annoyed me at the time, but he was so old & fked up I didn't say anything to him. He was nuts anyway. Long gone now; I wonder what his family thought of all the funeral pictures when they cleaned out his belongings.

OP (04C) I replied to you in another thread, this is a reply for the post above as I have seen a lot of it!

My father was a undertaker from the 40s till early 80s and the last 20 years he was in business taking pictures was quite common.

Some people asked permission but many just went up to the casket area and snapped away!

I've never seen anyone take a photo of the deceased laid out but I'm sure there has. Personally, I'd prefer to remember that person as what they looked like when alive when viewing family photos..

I have photographed a few funerals before and video taped several services. Each time was because certain family members could not attend the actual services. I didnt bill anybody or charge anything for them though.

I've seen it, yes. I think it's just bizarre as hell. But given the deceased and his family it didn't surprise me one bit.

There's lot of photographs of famous people in their caskets. Lenin, Stalin, for example. It's not uncommon. In fact there are pics of my grandmother lying in her casket around here somewhere.
And lots of early western pics of outlaws, coins over the eye's etc at funerals.

I know they took pics at my grandfather's funeral (1964) of the flower arrangements and the coffin was in a couple. I don't remember any actually of him though.
When my grandson passed my Mom told me she saw my ex-mother-in-law take a pic of him in the open casket. Mom told her my son had specifically requested none be taken and the ex-mil said she would delete it. I never told him, and hopefully she did.

When Tim passed, it was nice to see pictures of the event. The Philippines was too far for most all of us to go on short notice and I know for me, it gave a bit of closure.

I think the whole idea of open casket funerals is a bit on the morbid side. They say it gives closure, but all it gives me is nightmares. My best buddy died at age 37 and the first picture in my mind of him is him lying there in the box. I'd rather have a happy picture of him on top of the casket in my mind to remember him.

I've always felt that way. When my father died, I purposely did not go into the "viewing" room at the funeral home until the casket was closed. I didn't want that memory of him.

When my mother passed, we didn't have anything at a funeral home, as all of her friends & relatives were already gone. We had a small graveside service with 6-8 people, no open casket time. Another unpleasant image avoided.

The way I was raised and where I came from - taking pictures of the dead is just morbid and a disrespect of the family of the deceased. Just not in good taste.
