As new measures to control COVID-19 take effect, some Mass. residents conflicted over new mask, gathering rules

BOSTON — Whether you’re in a large city like Boston or a small town in Massachusetts, you are now required to wear a mask at all times in public – even if you can be 6 feet apart from others.

The new order takes effect Friday at 12:01 a.m. and applies to everyone over the age of 5. According to the state’s website, people who do not wear a mask while out in public, per the new mandate, could face a civil fine of up to $300 per violation. There is still an exception for people with medical conditions.

While some Massachusetts residents are applauding the new rules, others are sharing a different sentiment. "This is just a waste of time. This is America, and we live in a free country,” said Valmori, who didn’t want his last name published. “They are going to have a hard time enforcing this.”

Gov. Charlie Baker said the new mask requirement and other rules, including a stay-at-home advisory from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., are in response to an alarming spike in COVID-19 cases. Baker said he’s hoping to avoid having to revert to a Phase 1 or 2.

“If we need to dial it back just a little bit, and it’s an inconvenience, what’s the big deal? Why is it so hard?” questioned Leslie Kurnick.

Massachusetts has also reduced the limit on indoor gatherings to 10 people. It’s now a maximum of 25 people for outdoor private gatherings. All private gatherings must end and disperse by 9:30 p.m.

“That’s difficult because people have homes and large families. Sometimes people have guests over,” said Lorenzo Vosquez. “But I think we are on the cusp of a second wave so it’s better to tackle this now.”

The fines for violating the new rule on gatherings have been set at $500 for each person over the limit. Baker expects these new rules will remain in place for the next month at least.
