I drove all throughout that state a few summers back. Hell saw many people so poor they had dirt lots, no a/c, sitting on couches on the front poorch attempting to stay cool from the heat.
Starving after arriving in Charlotte at 11pm, the local wafflehouse looked staffed with female prison parolee's.
Some of the areas along the outer banks looked decent. But the idea of living with persistent chances of annual flooding and storm damage would be a hard no for me.
But....cheap living.
I'm speculating the areas we visited or drove through are not representative of an entire geographic. But dayum...many locals were poking fun of SC. Can't imagine how bad SC must be.
Born and raised in NC and I've been to ID and I'd much rather live in NC than any land locked state in the western United States. The rest of the country and especially people that live in a land locked states think every hurricane reported hits every coastline every year. My brother lives 2 blocks from the Atlantic ocean and he doesn't live in fear of them like some from Idaho think. Idaho, No thank you. Never liked the west. It's fun to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
See two can play this bash another state game.

Calm down Skippy. Weather is the least of my concerns. Large crowds of millions surrounding you in neighboring communities and counties with a LOT of those same residents
being low income, low IQ hood -rats...no thanks. You believe those same ferrel idiots wont venture into your neighborhoods when chit goes bad?

For the record, we own a beautiful coastal home in Dana Point...my children maintain it. It's literally on the inland side of Coast hwy, a two min walk to Salk Creek/Ritz and not on friggen stilts NEVER been floaded...ever. I still visit regularly. But have ZERO desire to live there full-time under current circumstances.

My wife and I simply no longer desire to reside among the hords in human beehives stacked-up at traffic lights while trying to commute to a strip mall on every friggen corner.
Same as why we left HI...too many people creating a density nightmare!

Seasonal cold weather is easy to escape. Shithole neighbors, neighboring ghetto counties etc not so much when you reside there full time. Many simply adjust and turn a blind eye. That's no longer acceptable IMHO.
YMMV.

This ^^^ exactly.

I went to Fort Walton Beach today...a small city on the coast just west of Destin and I felt like I was in Miami.

I would probably have a stroke if I was to visit NYC.

I know Asheville was a lovely tourist spot a few years back, from what I'm finding out now, I doubt I'll ever go back.

It's not as bad as some folks are saying. It's pretty lame if you judge an entire state's appeal based on travelling through one time in your life. But hey, I'm happy to hear some folks hate it, don't like it, wouldn't live here. That's great. It means less people likely to move in and ruin the place. Subdivisions bring cheap housing, which brings low income buyers, which ruins what used to be a quiet chunk of heaven out in the country. We have 100+ acres in the country and not a lick of traffic until you get near a highway or a city. Y'all can keep your beach front bull shit where you're sitting ass to elbows with your neighbors. I'll be 4-wheelin, fishin, and huntin in my yard.

All states have shitty areas don't care what state it is.
NC has changed unfortunately due to the influx of libtards from NE looking to escape the high taxes and political BS. They have borought it here... When we finally get rid of th e ****er for governor who been on his knees kissing every leftist companies ass the state will hopefully see a turn around.
He doesn't agee with have a pecker use men's room.. Enough said.
The RDU area has become a traffic and housing nightmare over the last 2 decades.
Get away from the urban areas and its almost like it was long ago.

See two can play this bash another state game.
No one playing, stating facts from the article, pubs are concerned about the state going purple and then blue,,, it is not bashing when it is true.

Others in here post endless subjective horseshit, this is very different.

The Winter Garden area has gone snakesh!t -stop lights every quarter mile now and high density high-rises appearing on the sky line - wife and I figure another two years when granddaughter goes off to college and we may sell out and bolt to a more sedate location.

Visited Asheville two years ago. Will not be back. Still like the Outer Banks but it is getting so built up the traffic is terrible and it’s lost the vibe we loved when we first started going there in the 1980s
