As for the the middle of the road deal: I started riding on the street in 1976, and at that time here in CA, there were a LOT of '50's and early '60s cars on the road, with road draft tubes. Our cars didn't start getting a PCV system until '62 or so, so a lot of older cars with blow-by would be oiling down the center of the lane. Oil leaks, too. We were taught by the DMV to stay to one side or the other of the 'black stripe' in the middle. I converted my '61 Corvette from road draft tube to PCV. |

When I called DMV to find out what I needed to do to get a motorcycle endorsement on my license they said ride it over and do a road test. So my first bike ride was a 40 mile round trip without an endorsement. Got my first learning experience on that ride, not to look in the mirror without a good reason, and to watch for people who stop in the middle of the road for no reason. Close one, my front tire cleaned the dust off that guys rear bumper.
The road test consisted of some old guy watching me do a single loop of the parking lot. Never had rider training and never crashed. Coincidence? I don't know, you be the judge |

Time for the test you had to provide a vechicle in perfect running order and a driver to follow behind and take the DMV officer. You were on your bike for about 20 minutes with all sorts of things you had to do! If you passed you could then legally drive the bike out of the restricted test area on a temporary license. and a couple weeks later get your updated drivers license in the mail. |

My first bike was a Suzuki 250, not or no longer road legal. Somehow I got it in the trunk of my 72 Ford and brought it to a new highway construction project that was under a delay, and that's where I learned to ride. The roadbed and shoulders were graded and grassed over, perfect conditions for fast riding, and maneuvers such as steep climbing and U turns on top of cut slopes.
In Massachusetts you applied for your motorcycle permit and, I guess, were allowed to ride to the exam. My exam took about a minute, did a figure 8 in the parking lot. |

I'd still ride if it weren't for cell phones and distracted drivers. My '72 BMW R75 toaster is on non op for going on the 4th year.

Toaster tank. Nick name for the second-gen BMW's that were introduced in 1970 with the chrome side panels on the gas tank and the new, non-Earles type front fork.

This old dinosaur will lock both wheels at speed. My bike was something like $3450 new in 1972. As much as some new full sized cars.

That bike was a chic magnet. In college, I literally had them lined up for rides. In fact, I scored my first date with Baby Doll on that bike. |

I bow to your superior intuition. I grew up doing things on pedal bikes that would make Evel Knevel blush. Quit this after it sent a kid who was trying to copy me to the hospital. Sad day but I did get to ride along in the ambulance. Quite the adventure. Pro-tip... Land on your wheels, not your face.

I think the details do matter because they either give credence to the poster if correct or expose them as something less than fully aware of reality.
I do think the message was on point even if the OP apparently doesn't know much about guns. |
