That's all well and good, but depending on their dive profile (how deep and how long they were down, previous dives that day, what gas they were breathing, etc) anyone in that situation may not be able to escape without serious compromises to their safety.

Ascent rates in particular are very important. Taking a safety stop at 20 feet underwater for several minutes is also a very important thing to do.

You have been out of it for a while. It's 15 feet safety stop for 3 minutes before surfacing. But you rip the regulator out of my mouth at any depth and you'll get shanked.
