I Got a Photo Speeding Ticket in the Mail

The ticket states I was doing 70 in a 45. The ticket also provides a website that shows me the video, so I checked it out, it’s me alright, but it doesn’t look like 70. So…in the video the camera is fixed. Right as I come into view there is a right lane turn out and a fire hydrant. At the end of the turnout, the lane ends at a curb. I measured it on Google Earth and it’s 150 feet. In the video it takes me 2 seconds to cover that distance, which is 75 feet per second which equals 51 mph. Was I slowing down from 70? No, my brake lights never come on.

The ticket states it’s a no points, non-reported fee, no impact to insurance. It’s $75 and unless I pay it or dispute it in the next 30 days, I can’t renew my tags.

Has anyone tried to dispute one of these? It’s not the money, I’m like the rest of you, rich beyond words. And if I thought I was guilty I’d pay the fine, but it sure doesn’t seem right. What to do..?

Pay the fine and move on. At my age, and I'm well off, you have to pick your battles....an interesting aside. I found out a couple years back that some third party company was getting $1400/month for every red light camera in the county AND a piece of every citation issued. Evidently I chose the wrong career path.

In traffic court there is ZERO "innocent until proven guilty". I had a judge announce that the the court.

No. And in the video there’s several other cars around me doing the same speed, and a truck pulling a landscaping trailer directly behind me, closing ground. If I’m doing 70, we’re all doing 70, and it would have looked like NASCAR.

I found that site a couple of days ago. It’s mostly disputing it over procedural stuff. Not, look, I can prove it kind of stuff.

It’s me, I remember being in that area at the time it says I was there. If I dispute it, I want show them their own video as proof I wasn’t doing 70.

But, I’m probably just going to pay it and move on…

Does the video on the website have more than a second or two of footage??
If so your defense could be you were never near 70mph--I guess what I am saying does it show you going from 51mph to 70mph, does it show your car's speed through the duration of the video?

What state? Before Texas outlawed them, people found out there were no teeth in the law, so people quit paying. There wasn't really any recourse for that. They couldn't block paying the car registration, they couldn't arrest the owner for a civil 'infraction,' they couldn't really do anything. The city of Houston threatened to report non payment to the credit bureaus, but that also turned out to be an empty threat, because it costs money to do that, and people who already aren't going to pay STILL aren't going to pay if the city tried to report it. And I suppose even if they did, you'd have the opportunity to dispute the report anyway.

Unless your state, county, or city has some sort of enforcement mechanism besides empty threats, I'd simply ignore that piece of mail as spam. I'm guessing they didn't even send it certified mail, so there's no proof you even received their bullshit in the first place.

I never got one, but certainly wouldn't have paid if I did, and now they're outlawed in Texas anyway.


Edit: I see they threatened to not renew your license plate tag. Check with your county to see if that's actually true or not. They threatened that here, but it turns out, the counties refused to NOT take money from people because the city had some kind of issue with them. So the cities LIED.

Check that out before you pay. You're being shaken down for bullshit, Mob style.
