I have an old Johnson CB base station I got as a kid. Don’t have an antenna though. Guess I could rig something up.

Those are bizarre displays by my standards, but I only have handhelds and base.

Mine may have a function to index channels like a scanner, but I always just look at the freq.

I have not had a landline for 20+ years.

I answer about 10% of my cell calls.

My life would be unaffected, I would remain self-centered and dogcentric.

Actually, I relocated it just below the air vents (above the center screen)

My antenna mount is likewise brilliant

The reality is we don’t have good comms options in a SHTF scenario or some scenario where you need to quietly organize.

CB does t have range and will be jammed with people. Good for a small radius around your unit. But not suitable for private, two way comms.

HAM is next but very easy to track location and all talk is public. It is easily jammed. Furthermore getting a license entitles the gov to randomly check your equipment as in, enter your house without a warrant. It is also illegal to use any kind of code over HAM.

Mesh is interesting bit text only, very limited range and requires you to scatter mesh units across the land for any distance. You would need solar power and they are easy to dismantle and jam.

Cell phones are worthless.

Military field phones are secure but require wires. Good for coordinating soldiers in a specific area but impractical due to wire.

Landlines might work but nobody has the. And they can also be tapped.

The problem isn’t comms options. It’s finding secure comms that have range that some entity cannot “turn off” or jam.

Trunking digital radio (like the police) is expensive.

Satellite phones are a possibility but expensive. Hard to equip a lot of people with them. Entities can also block Sat phones due to agreements with Sat companies so they can keep their license.

In short, big problem.

Here's a coincidence: I just finished watching the movie "Red Dawn," which I've seen a few times but it's been many years, forgotten most of it.

When I was young, yeah we were all worried about the Soviets invading. Not a problem anymore, we're being taken over from within.
Yes, from within. Been the plan in making since WW2 era..

In Alaska, a lot of CB and Sat phone usage up there. Sat phones arent too bad now, and Elon Musks sat systems are coming around. Bit pricey now, but will eventually be affordable.
CB radio and a HAM..
just have a coordinated plan with family etc that you need to speak with. If SHTF, get the family unit together, and deal with surviving..

Yes and no but the question is, whom are you wanting to hide your transmission contents from? Depending on that answer, there are, IN FACT, legal means (and otherwise) to scramble the intelligence on a transmission on amateur frequenceis
