Default 2.5 million more people, aged 19 to 25, have health insurance

Atlanta (CNN) -- About 2.5 million young people have received health insurance coverage as a result of health care reform measures that President Barack Obama signed into law last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday.

The Obama administration trumpeted the figure as a sign that the controversial legislation is succeeding.

About 2.5 million more people, aged 19 to 25, have health insurance than had it before the law took effect because of a provision that lets young adults remain on their parents' insurance plans through age 26, the agency's National Center for Health Statistics said.

"Moms and dads around the country can breathe a little easier knowing their children are covered," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.

Young adults have traditionally been the age group least likely to have health insurance, the Department of Health and Human Services said.

The policy extending dependent coverage up to age 26 took effect for plan renewals beginning in September 2010.

The new estimates show that by the following June, the percentage of insured young people in that age group rose from 64% to 73%, Health and Human Services said. Based on census figures, that percentage change equates to about 2.5 million young people, the agency said.

Obama signed the health care reform package into law in March 2010 after the legislation made it through Congress with no Republican support.

GOP leaders argued the bill creates a government bureaucracy, burdens small business owners, and will prove costly.

The measure involving coverage for dependents up to age 26 has generally not been a source of dispute.

That's really terrific since they are the demographic least likely to use healthcare in the first place.

Maybe they can do a nice press release about car insurance coverage for pedestrians.

What do you want to bet that a large percentage of those newly insured kids have pre existing conditions that they would otherwise not be able to get coverage for?

That's cool, but this just encourages them NOT to get real jobs with benefits, like the rest of us responsible people did in that age bracket.

True... age 19 - 25 is the only time in our lives when we are immortal.

I spent much of my time at that age as both bulletproof and invisible.

some states have been mandating insurance carriers cover dependents under age 26, regardless of their student status, for YEARS.
the few that I can recall off the top of my head are Florida, Texas, and Utah...

Let's see.

Successful people have a home. Let's subsidize homes so that poor people can have homes.

Successful people have a job. Let's give poor people jobs, or just pay them not to have a job.

Successful people have a college degree. Let's subsidize college so poor people can get a degree.

Successful people have healthcare insurance. Let's give poor people free healthcare insurance.

The state tries to subsidize the markers of successful people. The problem is, the poor are still staying poor. Why is that? Perhaps it is the behavior of the poor, the inability to delay gratification, the lack of a real work ethic, the general attitude that is the problem. But who cares, the successful people can afford it.

"GOP leaders argued the bill creates a government bureaucracy (it will), burdens small business owners (it has), and will prove costly (it certainly will when the big ticket items hit).

Apparently we shat all over the unemployed...and it's somehow our fault they're too lazy to get a f'kn job.

My last firm had a round of lay off's "due to the economy"...but it was just really purging the people they didn't want there.

my health insurance premium actually decreased, as did my employers contribution.
I will make up that decrease and then some with the higher out of pocket costs for any treatment...
