Thumbs down A leftist's wet dream: EU to BAN cars from cities by 2050

This would be hilarious if it wasn't for the fact that our own leftist party here in the states is full of sociopaths who share the same goal.

EU to ban cars from cities by 2050
Cars will be banned from London and all other cities across Europe under a draconian EU masterplan to cut CO2 emissions by 60 per cent over the next 40 years.

Quote:
The European Commission on Monday unveiled a "single European transport area" aimed at enforcing "a profound shift in transport patterns for passengers" by 2050.

The plan also envisages an end to cheap holiday flights from Britain to southern Europe with a target that over 50 per cent of all journeys above 186 miles should be by rail.

Top of the EU's list to cut climate change emissions is a target of "zero" for the number of petrol and diesel-driven cars and lorries in the EU's future cities.

Siim Kallas, the EU transport commission, insisted that Brussels directives and new taxation of fuel would be used to force people out of their cars and onto "alternative" means of transport.

"That means no more conventionally fuelled cars in our city centres," he said. "Action will follow, legislation, real action to change behaviour."

The Association of British Drivers rejected the proposal to ban cars as economically disastrous and as a "crazy" restriction on mobility.

"I suggest that he goes and finds himself a space in the local mental asylum," said Hugh Bladon, a spokesman for the BDA.

"If he wants to bring everywhere to a grinding halt and to plunge us into a new dark age, he is on the right track. We have to keep things moving. The man is off his rocker."

Mr Kallas has denied that the EU plan to cut car use by half over the next 20 years, before a total ban in 2050, will limit personal mobility or reduce Europe's economic competitiveness.

"Curbing mobility is not an option, neither is business as usual. We can break the transport system's dependence on oil without sacrificing its efficiency and compromising mobility. It can be win-win," he claimed.

Christopher Monckton, Ukip's transport spokesman said: "The EU must be living in an alternate reality, where they can spend trillions and ban people from their cars.

"This sort of greenwashing grandstanding adds nothing and merely highlights their grandiose ambitions."

I don't see the big deal ... the EU has been socialist/communist/national socialist fascist since the dark ages ... except when they were Iraq War coalition forces ... then the only socialist/communist/national socialist fascists were here in America who *weren't with but against Bush and the neocons* ... especially when gas prices here double'd like the EU and we have the worlds worst car emissions ...

And why would right-wingers care when the corvette made by Govt. Motors is hardly considered socialist/communist/national socialist fascist ?

Dude,

I'd love to agree or disagree with you exotix, but I don't understand sentence fragments....

Are you okay? Do we need to call you an ambulance? Stroke?

Oh, I would be more amicable if these kinds of comments didn't invalidate the gist ...

You refute that there are a LARGE number of leftists who wish to tax and regulate 95% of the population OUT of the freedom of car ownership and driving? Who wish to fundamentally destroy suburbia and force people into inner city living and public transportation?

You haven't been paying attention if so. This is a world-wide movement, and America is no exception. Thankfully these people are a minority in our country, FOR NOW. Their numbers are much greater in Europe.

No, I'm informing you like I did with you and some of the other right-wingers on CFPR&C ... who from time to time I re-wrote their case (prose) so to make your case so to impress your constituents and for adult-like effective discussion ... simply by removing wackadoo comments ...

I'm all for it if it can stand on its own in the market.

That means prices/times in line with air travel. If it can't deliver that than I'll vote with my wallet.

we will have to do it sooner or later, but it's not like we haven't done it before. [the Interurban, Trolleys, Street Cars, Passenger Trains etc.] the reason we rode them back in the day is because we were poor & automobiles were expensive & the roads were shit. the GOP will get us there again.

So what? I wouldn't call sitting in a parking lot for four hours during rush hour "freedom."

Cities and cars don't mix any more than cities and horses or cities and carriages did. Cities work a lot better with a combination of mass transit and personal transport (feet, bicycles, segways, etc.) A city designed around a lack of cars would be a much nicer place to live than one designed around cars. This much I've seen from my travels around the world.

Cars, on the other hand, are superior for the suburbs and the country, so legislating them completely out of existence would be stupid.

If people want the "freedom" of their cars, don't live in the cities. Or live in the city and leave your car parked near one of the outlying mass transit stations.

If the residents of a city and their representatives choose to convert their roads into walking/bicycling/etc. areas, that's their choice.

And here is the problem, it doesn't appear to be their choice! That's the point here!

But we can't have an intelligent conversation about because of exotix. The others I can deal with, but he's a lunatic. So i'm outa here.

I mean don't get me wrong ... I was never concerned about CFPR&C'rs coming over enmasse over here when CFOT and the rest of CF made the exodus and now comprises the majority of VB & VBOT ...

Can you imagine what this place would be like if they did ?
