so much for a relaxing long weekend
On Wednesday, my boss asked if I was available to work Friday and Saturday. Since friday would be double time and Saturday time and a half, I worked.
Thursday I started work on an order of cub cadet parts for another seller. Friday after work, Saturday after work and today, I worked on his parts. Just got them done, packed and purchased postage. Below is ten welded flange driveshafts and three PTO pulley pullers |

and under the heading of "nothing is ever easy", here's a picture of the carriage lever on my Monarch lathe.
As I was cutting the round steel bar to length, I heard "clunk" as I stopped the machine using the lever by the headstock. This will be going out to another friend who has more experience welding cast iron than I do |

So grind the ends flat and turn the stubs to a diameter you can thread. Make an internally threaded coupler and Red Loctite the thing together. Return to your regularly scheduled programming already in progress. And quit asking that antique lathe to perform like a new CNC machine just because you can.

The reason it broke was improper cooling when it repaired by a previous owner. He will preheat, weld and wrap it in a heat blanket for slow (correct ) cooling. |

I bead blasted both pieces at work so he had clean surfaces to braze. Bill ground the snot glob weld down to approximately original size so it would look better. He also added a chamfer so there was room for the brazing material. We fixtured the lever to keep it close to original shape for brazing. It wasn't perfect but it was close enough ( it's not a show piece, I want it to work correctly ) 1st pic Preheating the cast iron lever with an oxy acetylene torch. Bill had just sprinkled flux ( borax ) on the lever. 2nd Brazing the first side 3rd Brazing the opposite side 4th A little bit of time on the scotchbrite wheel smoothed everything so it not only looks good but it's also smooth to the touch 5th installed and ready to make chips. |
