Default Google announces 1 gb/second internet.

That's about 100 times faster than broadband -

HOW in hell they going to deliver?? over existing infrastructure, or airwaves??

OK signed up, but not airwaves, they running their own fiber all over the country?? doubtful they got the money to do THAT, hell it was all one company could do with Railroad right of way access to do that trick some 15+ years ago, and they folded....

so what they going to do,? use Comcast fiber up on the poles here?? doubtful also....

I'd love to see it put downward pressure on other ISP's...but I won't be holding my breath.

I mentioned it in the thread at CF.

If google offers 5down/1up in KC (for FREE), people outside KC are not going to be happy paying $60-$70/mo for 5down/1up.

I know of ISP's that currently charge $100/mo for a 10M connection...not far from KC.
And that is with brand new fiber plant.
That is absolutely blown away by google's offerings.

They won't be a direct competitor, but it could be a downward force on prices.
At least it makes sense in my feeble little mind.

One interesting thing is availability of fiber.

A couple months ago, fiber was 6-months out.
Not as bad now, but supply cannot keep up with demand as it is.

My fiancee (and possibly I) will be working to make that fiber cable fairly shortly if things work out well.
Good luck

I've not been around too much recently, how is the health?

My broadband is 100Mb...so that would only be 10x faster.

Once the internet proved that it could stream porn by buffering more videoand audio than was required to see/hear thigh-to-ass-cheek-slapping in realtime, is there really anything more to achieve for the masses?

$300 up front or $25 per month for the first year, then it's free.
I'd be all over that.

When I retired from the phone company in 2002 they had fiber capable of carrying 600 Gb/s so 1 Gb/s today isn't such a big thing. The infrastructure that is already in the ground is quite capable of those transmission rates. They can simply attach equipment to the ends of the fiber that has better laser transmitters and more sensitive optical receivers. With color multiplexing they are already into the multi-Tb/s range.

Then it's also the weakest link. Moving the data is fine, but the fiber needs to go to the house.

Long haul data transfer is hard. Before I busted my head I was working with ORNL for long-distance data transfers. Even saturating a 100 Gbps pipe is difficult when you're doing it over a couple thousand miles and that's point to point.

Thousands of feet are MUCH different than thousands of miles.
In 2002, most companies around here were ahead of the curve if they did Fiber to a node, and served customers off twisted copper.
I started where I work in 2000, and we did that kind of network and we've ALREADY rebuilt plant ( to fiber to the home (fttp))in the last few years.
2002 to today is a different world.

Technically, my local telco has 1gig pipe to my house right now...
The best they offer is 10M for $100/mo.
