I mentioned it in the thread at CF.
If google offers 5down/1up in KC (for FREE), people outside KC are not going to be happy paying $60-$70/mo for 5down/1up. I know of ISP's that currently charge $100/mo for a 10M connection...not far from KC. And that is with brand new fiber plant. That is absolutely blown away by google's offerings. They won't be a direct competitor, but it could be a downward force on prices. At least it makes sense in my feeble little mind. |

One interesting thing is availability of fiber.
A couple months ago, fiber was 6-months out. Not as bad now, but supply cannot keep up with demand as it is. |

When I retired from the phone company in 2002 they had fiber capable of carrying 600 Gb/s so 1 Gb/s today isn't such a big thing. The infrastructure that is already in the ground is quite capable of those transmission rates. They can simply attach equipment to the ends of the fiber that has better laser transmitters and more sensitive optical receivers. With color multiplexing they are already into the multi-Tb/s range.

Then it's also the weakest link. Moving the data is fine, but the fiber needs to go to the house.

Thousands of feet are MUCH different than thousands of miles. In 2002, most companies around here were ahead of the curve if they did Fiber to a node, and served customers off twisted copper. I started where I work in 2000, and we did that kind of network and we've ALREADY rebuilt plant ( to fiber to the home (fttp))in the last few years. 2002 to today is a different world. Technically, my local telco has 1gig pipe to my house right now... The best they offer is 10M for $100/mo. |
