A.N. was awesome cinematography and captured a slice of the insanity and confusion of the war.

D.H. got right into the gut wrenching emotional/psychological effects of it.
The scenes where they come back "home" and it's painfully obvious that they are barely shadows of their former selves....

Boot camp during Full Metal Jacket, all of Apocalypse Now Redux, Platoon, we were Soldiers! The Deer Hunter, Hamburger Hill, 84 Charlie Mopic

For WWII my favorites are When Trumpets Fade and The Lost Batallion. There are tons of WWII movies that are wonderful.
