Default Legal question

I have a storage unit up where my mother used to live. After she died, I left some stuff in there, as there was no space down here. This place is 200 miles away. My rent is paid by automatic credit card payments. I would like to get this payment off my back, and don't care about the contents. I don't have a truck and don't have anyplace to put this stuff anyway.
Can anybody tell me if I can just cut off the credit card -payments and let them have the junk? Or do I have other, better alternatives?

Yeh, they just auction off the contents......just like on TV, at least they do here in Jax/OP Florida......I"d call them about 2 weeks notice before you stop payments.....

Of course, I don't know about any local laws there nor have I seen your rental agreement. At the storage place I have, I signed a rental agreement that states after termination of the agreement I will leave the place clean and empty. If you just walk away from the place and leave stuff there, you would be in violation of such an agreement.

There are also laws here about what a storage facility has to do to legally take possession of the contents, and it takes several months. I'm not sure you would be liable for the rent during that period. I'd be worried about the account going into collection and damaging your credit.

Have you contacted them and explained your situation? Maybe they would be willing to let you sign over possession of the contents and they could auction it off. Bottom line is, when you have a contract with someone it rarely goes well if you just walk away without communicating with the other party.

in most cases, a married couple runs the place and lives onsite. they don't get paid much (free rent, yippee). i'd call them, explain the situation, and offer the contents to the managers onsite in return for emptying the place out and ending the charges.

I would make at least one last look before deeming contents non wanted.

I'd hate for there to be something of value, or keep sake that I forgot or didn't know was in there.
