Default Church Bells

In our small (28 houses) village, we have an old Presbyterian Church, that's been there for well over 100 years.

Yesterday, it occurred to me how much I enjoy having it so close by, with its towering steeple.

Every single day at 12:00 noon and 6:00 pm the clock in the tower chimes the hour, bellowing through the valley. These are reminders to the farmers out in the fields to come in time for lunch or dinner.

Just moments later the organist hits the keys, heavenly sounds traveling for miles through the village and finally over the mountain! Sometimes it's seasonal music, but mostly it's gospel/church tunes, all are soothing melodies.

My thanks goes out to those responsible for loading the player playing the organ and never failing to miss a "beat"! Some 35 years, I don't ever remember not hearing the organ play.

My grandparents were farmers in Indiana and they called the noontime meal dinner and the 6pm meal supper.

Really? You couldn't have picked a more liberal twat to post. He ranted at conservatives in his audience and told them to leave! F him and the gay manager that rode him in.

monks invented clocks so they could be sure to pray on time. man later took those same clocks and used them to measure how long you worked. we took something intended to be used for devotion and turned it into something used to enslave men. yay.

Hmmm, This, prayer "chime-time" at noon and 6:00 retains that very meaning.....!

kicker is, they were wrong.

there is no set time we are commanded to pray. we are commanded to pray continually. Israel (see Daniel for example) normally prayed 3 times a day, morning, noon, night.

someone yesterday asked me how long (in hours) it took me to build the tables for the church. i don't know. i don't track my hours in the shop. it takes as long as it takes. depends on what else i have to do that day, how much energy i have to devote to shop projects each day, and some days you just have to wait for steps to be done (glue to dry, finish to cure). no point in rushing something that you expect will be around for decades.

so instead of letting the natural rhythms of the day guide our activity, we now are slaves to a clock.....punch in, punch out, be sure to record all your hours on your time card....

Yes and No.

I pray whenever I feel like it. No special times, when the moment hits me. When I cut the grass over my lost pets. When I'm driving down the road. When I think of my younger brother that's been gone for just under 20 years.

Nice preacherjack brohiem......

Then Organ music alone brings these moments no matter the minute...

And the only one to punch me in or out ,is my wife, the human I chose to witness my time here....

All my relatives growing up were farmers. Breakfast was always breakfast but the mid day meal could be dinner or lunch. During the spring, summer and fall when it was busier and working hard in the fields the mid day meal was large to fuel the need and the evening meal was lighter and it was supper. If the mid day meal was lighter as in the winter it was called lunch and the heavier evening meal was dinner.

Growing up outside of Boston it was the air raid siren at the old firehouse. Every day at noon.

Here I can hear the chimes from the Catholic Church on rare occasions. The atmosphere has to be just right.

As a kid, we’d hear three loud blows of the horn then a boom, a blast from the dynamite explosion at the local quarry, a block and a half away

Quarries are understood by most. They are basically excavation projects with a life of 150 years or more. Nearly all of the material used for the local infrastructure came from there: all of the railroad beds, all of the roads and highways, all of the concrete block in the area, all of the concrete footings, frames, and building structures.

I did some consulting work for a quarry in Jamestown NY and asked for the geek tour. They have their own lake, and deer herds. An ad hoc museum of equipment used through the ages. The primary rock crusher was originally used in the Panama Canal.
