The Perfect Johnsonville Brats!
Ingredients:
1-2 pkgs Johnsonville Brats (Original) 12 pk beer (I use Miller Light) 2 onions 1 bag silver floss sauerkraut 1-2 lbs bacon toothpicks 1.) Poke brats 3-5 times with a fork on each side 2.) DRINK A BEER 3.) Cut onion in 1/8 thick medallions 4.) OPEN ANOTHER BEER 5.) Combine beer, brats and onions in stock pot big enough to where beer covers all the brats set in fridge for min 6 hrs, let the beer penetrate into the brats 6.) Finish rest of beer 7.) Go to store and get more beer 8.) Simmer brats until fully cooked 9.) Start Grill and DRINK A BEER 10.)When Brats are fully cooked, butterfly 3/4 way into brat, stuff opening with enough sauerkraut to open about 3/8-1/2 in. 11.) Wrap brat with Bacon securing bacon with toothpicks. Usually takes two pieces of bacon to wrap each brat. 12.) DRINK A BEER 13.) Grill brats until bacon is cooked and DRINK ANOTHER BEER! 14.) Remove toothpicks, serve, and enjoy with a BEER |

At first when I read to " Poke brats 3-5 times with a fork on each side" I was like NO WAY!!! You NEVER poke a brat! Then when I finished reading through the steps I understood why.

Bah. Homemade bratwurst is so much better than the crap that Johnsonville makes.

I 'cater' our club picnic every year. I boil the Johnsonville brats in straight Guinness for about a 1/2 hour, then bring to the picnic site and throw them on the grill, where I get a good 'color' on them (rich brown grill lines).
They don't last long. |
