Default One more question on El Camino wheels...

I started this thread yesterday:

https://www.thevettebarn.com/forums/o...se-wheels.html

With help from you folks, I found a set of NOS ones. Only problem is, 2 are 15" x 7", and 2 are 15" x 5.5". I think I can put a 215/70R15 on the 5'5" ones and a 235/70R15 on the &' ones or at least a 225.

Here's the question: The guy also has a set four of 15" x 8.5" ones. Stock wheels are 14" x 6". Would the 8.5" ones look out of place; i.e., stick out too far? Which set would you get? Prices are $900 for the NOS 7" and 5.5" and $1200 for the 8.5". All of them have new chrome center caps.

I think if you want to maintain a basically stock appearance, I wouldn't go wider than 7". Let's face it, you're not going autocrossing or drag racing.

Larry, the widest I would go is 7in. , because 8in. ones may run you into back spacing or front spacing issues with either the springs/suspension behind or the fenders in the front. But instead of the BIG/small look why not go 7s all around? Why go for the drag racing look? Same size wheels and tires all around is what I would do.

These were 15x7in. on my old Elkie...but I did have 8in Corvette wheels on it later but it's a much larger car than yours.

Have a look at others (like you already did, I'm sure)....no big and smalls....

The only decent ones I've found are the two 15" x 7" and two 15" x 5.5". I guess I could buy the two 7" and keep on looking.

put one right front, the other left rear, then use the narrow ones to fill in.

ah yes, constrained by the expectations of society. suppose you also didn't think of putting the wide ones up front.

i have a terrific imagination, and a finite budget. what could possibly go wrong?

Does this wheel swap have to be done right now, today? If not, why not just keep looking, at your leisure, for what you really want. I mean, you've managed to live all these years without these wheels, what's another few months?

FYI....I put a 'parts wanted' advert on CL and Kijiji for those turbines i found and a guy answered my ad from about 250 miles away. He put them on a bus and I picked them up in town at the station. I had looked for years before that. They were only available as an option on Z28s for a couple of years.

You know you're going to have to grow a mullet, get a polyester leisure suit and a "VAZ" necklace if you intend to drive that thing in public... right? If you don't appear in full character folks might just think you are a bit "touched".

Sonic Drive In's current TV spot features an El Camino, of questionable color.
