Default What would you do?

My daughter has an 8-year-old female "Feist Dog" named Gucci. Gucci woke her up last night making sounds like she was going to throw up a fur ball or something. Daughter took her to bed with her, and Gucci calmed down. This morning Gucci was doing it again, so my daughter took her to the vet.

The radiologist says that Gucci's trachea is shot and if it's not replaced with a stent very soon, she'll die. Mississippi State University at Starkville (about 2 hours away) can do the operation. It's $3,000.

Gucci has a history of health problems, including a leg joint operation about 3 years ago for $600. These dogs are very loyal and loving, but not good for much anything else except hunting squirrels.

My daughter can't afford the operation and has asked me to pay for it. What would you do?

Spence, you've got piles of money that you can't take with you. You put her through law school, so at some point she will be making piles of money, too. Pay some or all of the cost, whatever you work out with your daughter. It's not like she's asking for bail money or money for a new pair of shoes.

I know that the right thing to say here would be help the poor dog out

But to be honest?

3 Grand is 3 grand.. I wouldn't even think of spending it.

Things are different there than here I know, but here it would be the next cookout at someones birthday party..

Sounds cold I know, but dats life..

If anyone here feels differently, please feel free to donate your own $3000 to the cause..

i've had plenty of unexpected expenses these last few years. one very generous person here sent me an unsolicited check. i didn't ask anyone, family or otherwise, for help. not a grant, not a loan, nothing. my problems are my problem, and i'll deal with them as best i can.

when you start foisting your problems off on others, you'll be back for more. and the givers, particularly family, will get guilted into supporting someone else's choices, which may differ from the donor's view of life.

I'm willing to donate some of my earned, but not yet paid commissions from all the great money making ideas I have presented to Spence over the years. He can just deduct that from the amount owed and just forward a check for the difference.

I actually can agree with that sentiment. My question is, why doesn't the daughter have $ 3K lying around? He paid for law school and the house she lives in. She's working as a lawyer. What happened to all that money?

we agree on something?

there will be unexpected expenses in her future. you better have a plan. 6 months of money in the bank is a good start. 24 months is even better. how much is the deductible on your health insurance? out of pocket max? better have that in cash on Jan. 1 each year. it's hard to schedule health emergencies.

Lemme take another shot at this. If this is in fact true;

Sounds cold, but a trend seems clear. Future looks bleak.
It is what it is.

One option would be a replacement, though this breed is unknown to me. (Cost, sickliness, etc.)

Sounds like she needs to learn a little self sacrifice. Having emergency money may mean not going out to eat so often, not buying whatever it is she blows her money on, etc.
