Default Where's the best place to buy chef knives?

I'm thinking about getting a set of Globals or Shuns but not sure who is the best reseller of them? Any ideas?

Never tried Amazon for that, but they have everything else under the sun. And good return policies.

Yeah, I had seen some pretty decent pricing on them over there but wasn't sure if there was a store most chefs recommend. I'm kind of sick of my old crappy knives.

Well, if you are after good sharp knives for cheap, cheap, try the local commercial knife rental that supplies restaurants, hotels, etc, with their cutlery. When their knives get worn down but still great for home use, they sell them to the staff or public that knows, for peanuts. All my staff used to have them, for like 5-10$ a piece, all hollow ground, and very sharp, and sometimes you can get a famous brand. They all hold an edge too.

I've bought quite a few knives from Amazon. Shuns, Wuthstof, Victorinox etc. All good.

You may find a particular model cheaper somewhere else, but because I'm an Amazon Prime member, I rarely have to pay shipping and get the item in 2 days typically. The last knife I bought was a http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-47547-4-Inch-Fibrox-Handle/dp/B00093090Y/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1298309614&sr=8-3 to replace my old serrated knife that was a little too short and getting a bit dull.

I recommend to only buy serrated knifes for specific purposes and not get a whole set of them. And don't spend a lot of money on them because they really can't be sharpened easily or at all, just replace when they get dull. But otherwise buy quality knifes that will last a lifetime and never put them in the stupid dishwasher.

Knives at Knife Center and www.cutleryandmore.com have good prices and sales with free shipping.
Do not waste your money, go with Shuns you will love them
Also if your budget allows add few Kyocera Kyotop Damascus knives, ceramic blade super sharp, stays sharp and looks like work of art

Thanks for the advice! I'll check that out. Where do you find those places?

Why Shun over Global? They seem to be the two top knife brands of most major chefs

Two ways, ask at your local eatery or drinking hole. They probably use a local one, or let your fingers do the walking.....Yellow Pages! under cutlery rental, or knife rental...

No problem. I closed my restaurant 12 years ago, and I still use them for everyday slogging. Chopping frozen stuff, whatever, no worries.
I use large rare earth magnets on the fridge and stick em there, ready to go. Magnets help keep the edge too.
My Henckel pros sit in a block for special times. Dumb huh?
