Case in point, I bet ZERO criminals leave their jail system and return due to the extremely harsh conditions.

Visited Turkey twice. Rough and tough. Went thru the Bazaar just to say I did. The wife's support the men in prison, some of them turning tricks at the Bazaar.

Yes, Turkey has "debtor's prison" and a family member may have to prostitute to work off a male relative's punishment. Turkish brothels in the late 70's were full of such unfortunates - or so other soldiers told me...

Not counting most of the country is Muslim only a fool coming from a Christian country would get sideways with the authorities - I and a bus load of American servicemen were held at gunpoint for a few hours on a tourist trip from our base there (civilian clothes and no passports) while our identities were verified.
