Default This is why I spend $80/month on propane...

This is Fred in the work shop:

Fred is (or "used to be" is probably more accurate) a Bengal. He's about 18-years-old, pretty feeble, almost deaf. On cold days he stays in the work shop and eats and sleeps. On nice days he still likes to disappear to Gawd knows where. I worry that he'll get killed by a dog, possum, or a coyote. I know that one day he won't come home. I'll just have to assume that he died a natural, peaceful death.

To those of you who say I should keep him inside, that's not an option with Fred. He hates being inside the house; he screams at the door as if he's being tortured. I don't know if you've ever heard a Bengal scream, but it's eerie...and loud.

Fred has an abcess on his cheek, likely from a tooth problem since he has a history of bad teeth.

I drained it with a hypodermic needle and applied anti-bacterial ointment. I'll take him to the vet Monday, but I knew he needed relief now. There are no pet emergency places here. The swelling has gone down considerably. BTW, that's just eye drainage, not blood; the camera flash made it look red.

Bless you, old fella.

I'm more of a dog person than a cat person, but it does my heart good to see someone taking care of so many of our furry friends.

Cool Fred to have made it this long. Sounds like you have taken good care of him.

My brother had a cat that was 20 years old. One night she just decided it was her time, and didn't come back.

I had a dog do a similar thing. He was about 12. His outside time became longer and longer by his doing. One morning I let him out, a few minutes later I left for work. I drove past him as he was trotting down the road. He looked up at me as I drove by. He had a long, forlorn look in his eyes. I never saw him again..........

I miss that dog.

Dogs and cats know when their time is up. I had a Calico cat once; it was vacation time for me and my family, and I knew Callie had been acting sluggish lately. I took her to the vet before we left, and the vet said it was just old age. I took her home, and we left for a week.

When I got home, Callie came to me. but she was bleeding from her rectum. She could barely walk, and within a few minutes she died. I'm convinced she waited on me to get home before she died just so we could see each other one more time.

Thanks for the kind words, folks. Incidentally, Fred is the only cat I've ever had who realizes I'm trying to help him when he's sick or hurting. I had to use a big needle to drain his abcess, and it had to hurt like Hell. Fred didn't complain. He just tolerated it and then went back to sleep.

When I got home from work my mom asked me about the dog. She told me he never came home, so she went to work and we was not home when she got home from work. I told her of my morning sighting and the look on his face. I got on my bicycle and took a long ride looking in the areas that he could have been headed, put up some picture signs and such, never saw or heard a thing.

He was my dog.

I miss him.....

This is what the eggheads say propane looks like...

But I think it looks like this...

Taste the meat, not the heat.

I remember your thread and the heartache you felt. Your love for Rosie literally jumped from the page.

When you can drain an abcess from an animal and it sits there paitently until you are done, that is when you know that animal completely trusts you and loves you. I wish at times people could take lessons of loyality and love from our animals.
