Default Railroaders are generally sane......

Short Line engineer tries to ram Navy hospital ship

Generally.

I know the owners of this company. Like they don't have enough sh*t to deal with at the minute.

What a mess, any potential prosecution against the rail company? Or will the morons confession be enough to save the company a legal mess?

When I was in college, I dated a girl whose dad was a railroad engineer in Montana. Never got to meet him though.

It didn't look like it did that much damage, thankfully. The biggest cost will be fixing the concrete and moving the locomotive and boxcar back to the tracks. I wonder, did the wheelsets on the equipment suffer damage from that? Seems like they're pretty durable.

Val can correct me if I am wrong, but the company is always in peril when their employee does bad shit. It's up to a dude or dudette in a black robe to decide the rest.....

and do you want some crazy asshole judge deciding the next 50 years of your life.....

PSA: Whether you are an individual or a big-ass company with trains and shit, max out your umbrella policy. It not only pays out when you are liable, it pays for your defense. Get in serious trouble, you gonna need some defense.....

I suspect there is likely a $500k loss in terms of property on this, by the time they get the locomotive and boxcar back on the tracks, fix damages to them, and repair the other damaged items.

Liability for anyone who thinks they have been injured in this incident is anyone's guess.

There's actually a law against train wrecking?

It was reported that someone had released the break on a rail car and it drifted into another rail car causing approximately $603,000.00 in damages
Just imagine how much worse it would have been if the kids released the brake.

Maybe the railcar that got hit was filled with delicate glassware?

Two cars, the cargo, and whatever they hit after the mess. Easy

Even if the two cars were “totaled” with the depreciated value of a typical car you are looking at maybe? $100k max. Article isnt clear if the $600k is just the damage to the cars or cars plus lading or cars plus lading plus some supplemential damage. I guess if the impact knocked over a bilevel carrying new F150s and they all hit the ground you could be there

Problem is, you never know when someone is going to lose a screw. It can happen at any job at any time. That said, I don't want someone driving a 200 ton locomotive to come unglued on the job. Everyone got lucky on this deal physically. Could have been really bad.

Load of plastic resin pellets is $120k easy. Toss in a couple of $70k pressure differential covered hoppers, track damage, craning expenses, an say, a damaged building nearby and you're there easy.

(This is an example, I know very little about the incidemt in question.)
