Anyone that kills someone maliciously is mentally unbalanced. The defense would always apply.

Why do they get a lighter sentence because of mental illness?

Does an alcoholic get a lighter sentence for driving drunk? It's an illness.

It just seems that gunning down someone with a multi-tool in hand at 20' is over the line.

It also seems that the more days that I live, the tighter the reigns are from our government.
The screws are tightening on us, kinda like they did in Germany in the 30's and 40's.

It's not that simple. Remember, 911 was called about a person with a knife and gun.

You had a person who was acting like they were mentally imbalanced ( "shoot me" ) and basically forced the situation to a deadly end.

The GT Police want to go home to their families. They followed the rules of engagement. They spoke the rules to the student who decided they would not be followed.

I have had quite a few discussion with brother in law who spent time as a Military MP, 27 years in the Baltimore police force and 5 years as a Howard County Sheriff.

I can tell you that, with a reasonably good and accurate amount of second-hand knowledge, most people have absolutely no clue as to how bad true Nazi-ism really was. What's going on in the world today doesn't even come close.

My dad here in St. Louis is a reporter for a local magazine. He's been invited to try the new generation of simluator (300 degree coverage, belt to simulate YOU getting shot, etc, including choice of weapon) and making a shoot/no-shoot decision.

He's most definitely anti-gun, so it'll be interesting to see his take on it. If he writes about it, I'll post up the article.

People have no idea how dangerous someone is with a knife at 21 feet or less.

I have heard in the past that if you think you can defend yourself against an attacker with a knife...Spar with someone that is holding a red marker. Once finished...see who is still "standing".
