I suspect something less natural. Typically the cause is posted or communicated.

Such as "Bill had a massive heart attack and passed away on the 3rd" or "Bill had a motorcycle accident" or "Bill's cancer finally took his life" etc.

To say he died suddenly and/or unexpectedly without reason, makes me think it was something they don't want to communicate.

Just my opinion.

My cousin had beat cancer 3 times when number 4 came around, he didn't want to go through it again. They had meds that made him comfortable, I visited him the day before he passed. When he could stay awake we told old stories and laughed our azzes off. A fitting good bye.
