I've been in pharma for over 15 years. This cosmetic trend is moving exponentially. Everyone wants products people are willing to pay for if not on formulary.

Phil, in your perfect world, what system of government would you replace capitalism with?
Specifics and lots of detail, please. I'd also like to hear, assuming what you propose has been successfully implemented before, which country you would emulate. If it hasn't been successfully implemented, what would you do differently to make sure things would go right this time? This is a serious question. |

Money talks bullshit walks...money buys products, and research scientists focus n products that can make them money. Don't like it? Donate your money to malaria research.

So contribute money to fund malaria research. My understanding is that te government hast made that illegal yet. You are (currently) free to chose where to spend your dollars. Pick an organization and cut them a check.

I've never known anyone who has had malaria. I've seen a bunch of bald guys and some women.
We fix the problems we see. |

I met Gates on several occasions both before and after he married Melinda.
When single, he was an extreme nerd that would come to our meetings looking disheveled and wearing mismatched brown and blue socks. He was the epitome of a ruthless, monopolistic Capitalist that was raised as a very privileged kid in a house on the west side of Lk Washington. He had a role in, and cooperated with the Chinese gov't in the implementation of Internet censorship as a trade-off for selling software to the huge market in China. When MSFT's campus was in Bellevue, he wanted to expand. The city of Bellevue wanted to charge him more taxes. He refused and threatened to move. The city wouldn't budge, so he moved to Redmond (a couple miles away). He built his new 66,000 sq ft mansion on the east side of Lk Washington which includes a 60ft long swimming pool complete with an underwater music system. He lives in the most expensive house in the wealthiest neighborhood in WA state. His house is worth a conservative 151mm. It's taxable amount is $127.5mm for which he will pay a little over 1mm in property taxes for 2012. Off of his 2012 $42bb net worth, he earns $8.9mm per day. He had zero interest in giving any of his wealth to charitable causes before he met Melinda, a Catholic. She was raised very modestly and wears the pants in the family. She convinced him to use his amassed wealth, that he couldn't spend in several lifetimes, for charitable causes. The Gates foundation building that Melinda had built on Lk Union in Seattle cost $500mm. She initially wanted something understated, but the architectural designs she saw were a 'yawner' and therefore went with something 'a little more bold'. The foundation is worth more than $60bb. It contributes approximately $3bb annually. Last edited by Bingo Fuel; 03-14-2013 at 2:05pm. |

Are you telling Bill Gates how to spend his own money ??
I've only seen pictures of Bill Gates, but doesn't look like he needs baldness remedies. I have personally met the OP, been a while, but seems he could so benefit. So, the OP and Bill Gates have different agendas. Which one would you support ?? |

My Dad has malaria - got it when he was stationed in Panama and once you get it, it never really goes away. He's also losing his hair.
He'd rather have hair. |

Seems like we already had a low cost solution to malaria.........DDT. Of course, DDT works real well and is inexpensive to manufacture, so let's just prohibit folks from making and using it and instead deal with people dying from malaria. Sadly, it's the poorest folks who are the ones dying from malaria. Hey, if they could spray their hut with DDT and prevent mosquitos from biting them and giving them malaria, I'm sure they would do it.....but they can't, because we ban something that works.

On the other hand, thanks to Rachel Carson, we have those birds around to eat on Tuesday, after we eat the snow. If we had no birds, we'd just plain starve to death.

Money talks... all else hitchhikes..
Two examples of when no one looked past the trees for the forest Ulterior motives make people choose options which are not altruistic, at your age you should know this. Jimmy Carter chose to support 2 known communists in a fight to overthrow a "white rule" Rhodesia. There were issues in Rhodesia, but since the Us was so worried about the suppression of blacks, they over looked everything and supported them. Now Zimbabwe is a shithole, a place that was once the "breadbasket of Africa" now relies on foreign aid to support their starving population. White Zimbabweans have had their land stolen, these are not immigrants, they were born & raised there. No outcry? The UK and UN also embargoed Rhodesia as well, so we were not the only ones placating a "feel good sentiment". #2- Genocide in Rwanda 1994, not ancient history. wher was the world to denonuce this? The answer is simple, there is nothing anyone wants in Rwanda, so nobody cares. up to 1million people were killed, mostly macheted to death, UN peace keepers did nothing. nobody cared , lipservice was given that was all. Bottom line of this post: If you have no money or resources to offer, or are not the "flavor of the day" according to political correctness ... you are ****ed. |

This isn't a condemnation on capitalism. It's a reflection of what out society values. Wen people that are outraged about this will it have put Malaria Research in the top 10 items they spend their discretionary cash on.
There is a fundamental difference between people that think the government should force their fellow Americans to support their "pet projects" and those that feel the individual has that responsibility. If you are not going to allocate your own personal resources to championing the causes you support, how can you expect me to seriously entertain the thought of the government taking my resources at gun point for those same causes? |
