Sledge gives a pretty intense description of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (K/3/5) during the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa from a first person point of view. Pretty good read for anyone interested in WW II history.. It caught my eye because my father was on Peleliu.

That's one of the books the mini-series "The Pacific" was based on.

My Dad was Weapons Company 1/5th 1st MarDIV from Guadalcanal to Peleliu. Who was your dad with.

And Dad was a memeber of the Old Breed, He Joined in 1937.

I finally found the file that had all of my father's service records that we were able to obtain. He enlisted June of 43. The best I can tell from his records he was a Rifleman with the 1st Marine Division. From December 26, 1943 until February 10, 1944 he was on Cape Gloucester.
The next I see is him arriving on Guadalcanal on August 27, 1944. He arrived on Peleliu on September 15, 1944 and was wounded on the 18th of September. I am still trying to figure some of this out.

VITE1 and Defib1961, men I got all the respect in the world for your Dad's service. Those guys were REAL men. Toughest of the tough.
Defib, it looks like your Dad went in on the first day of Peleliu and was in on the capture of the Airfield.

Like most of the men from WWII, he rarely if ever spoke of the war, and when he did, it was never about a battle. After reading "With The Old Breed" I did something I never thought possible, I thought even more of my dad and all of the men on Peleliu and Okinawa. Makes me feel ashamed to complain about anything now.
