Vick given key to Dallas
*Key to the City*
Today Caraway still insists he gave Mike Vick a key to Dallas 'for the children' Caraway still insists he gave Mike Vick a key to Dallas 'for the children' | Dallas City Hall Blog | dallasnews.com Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway has been absolutely shellacked since we posted a story yesterday that he gave a key to the city of Dallas to convicted felon (and, oh yes, Philadelphia Eagles QB) Michael Vick. But this morning, on The Ticket (1310 AM), he stuck to his story that he gave Vick a key to the city "for the children." "Don't you believe it's possible that by honoring this felon you sent the wrong message to the kids? Now the kids say 'This guy killed dogs he went to jail he's on probation and he's getting honored with a key to the city that is supposed to be presented to someone like a war hero,'" one of the hosts said. "The kids don't say that," Caraway said. It came up that Kiss lead singer Gene Simmons got a key to the city last week for supporting the troops. Caraway said that supports him giving a key to Vick. "He is supporting the troops, I am supporting the children," he said. Caraway gave Vick the key during an event at Club Cirque that was attended by children who came to hear Vick's story. Caraway said he would do it all over again but would simply adjust the "P.R." on the front end. "I would probably put a little more upfront P.R. to it so that folks could have a much better understanding. I respect the citizens of this city and no one has done more, even in the animal arena, than I have in this city," he said. Caraway then decried the fact that he has received "the nastiest, racists e-mails" over the incident. He said that calls into question some who are criticizing him. But he added that he should be more cautious. "I will be open and more respectful and careful in how I move futuristically," he said. |

Vick should not be given anything except a kick in the ballz.
And he should have never been allowed back into the NFL...along with many of the other thugs. |

Wouldn't the MOH recipient be more worthy of a key to the city? Heck, I guarantee I've done more for "the kids" than Vick has...where's my key to the city. Maybe I just don't fit into the mayor's correct ethnic category

surprised this hasn't been all over the airwaves on Philly sports yet, but it will be for the next couple days now... Came across this philly.com article about the same "key to the city" story. Vick will be ran out of town now by the fan base, we could somewhat forgive on the dog-fighting, but to accept the key to city of Cowgirls,
Vick-key Mouse move POSTED: February 8, 2011 EAGLES QUARTERBACK Michael Vick was in Dallas Saturday night to receive the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award. Before that, at an afternoon event, he was given the key to the city by Dallas councilman and mayor pro tem Dwaine Caraway. Afterward, there was a run on hardware stores as residents of the Big D scurried to change their locks. OK, so that didn't happen (the changing the locks part). But citizens did let it be known they were not happy about honoring a guy who had served time in prison for running a dogfighting ring. So much so that the "real" mayor, Tom Leppert, issued a statement yesterday distancing himself from the incident. "The action taken was not sanctioned by my office and was not an official ceremonial honor on behalf of the City of Dallas," the statement read. Leppert's statement also said the key was presented "without my knowledge or approval." On Saturday, Caraway - who did not reveal the sponsor of the event but did say children were in attendance - said he thought "a great majority" of Dallas residents would want Vick to have the key to the city. He was as wrong as those who took the Steelers and the under. But that didn't stop him from sticking by his decision yesterday. "The message and the kids are far greater than all this response about, 'Why give him the key to the city?' " Caraway told ESPNDallas.com. "He is telling kids and exchanging with them the rights and wrongs of the things that he did and encouraging kids to further their education and to not deal with the drugs. To obey their parents and pick the people they hang around." An aside to the story is that Dallas radio reporter Richard Hunter attended, and filmed, the event. In the film, which can be found on the Internet, Hunter tells Vick that he adopted one of the quarterback's pit bulls. Hunter then tries to speak with Vick and show him a picture of the dog. Vick looks at the picture but does not speak with Hunter. Here's our Campbell with his Mike vick chew toy for a couple years ago: |

Eagles, Michael Vick reach 6-year deal
Monday, August 29, 2011 Updated: August 30, 11:02 AM ET PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Vick is really back on top now. Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles agreed on a six-year contract on Monday that again makes the Pro Bowl quarterback one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. With his new deal, Michael Vick has completed his comeback and the Eagles have made their franchise all about their embattled star, writes ESPN.com's Dan Graziano. A league source told ESPN's Andrew Brandt the deal is worth $100 million and a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that it contains roughly $40 million guaranteed. Vick isn't the only one who will benefit from his new contract. Vick still owes creditors in his bankruptcy case $19 million, according to Miami businessman Joseph Luzinski, the man in charge of paying back creditors in Vick's bankruptcy. Luzinski told ESPN's "Outside The Lines" that if Vick earns the full $100 million over six years, those creditors should be paid in full but if Vick simply gets the guaranteed money in the deal, those creditors likely will not get completely repaid. Vick has come a long way since spending 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges. He led the Eagles to the NFC East title last year, was the starting quarterback in the Pro Bowl and was the AP Comeback Player of the Year. "I'm very happy we were able to reach an agreement with Michael on this long-term contract," Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "It's a product of all the hard work Michael has done to better himself over the last couple of years, both on and off the field. I'm very proud that he has been able to achieve success again in this league, but he'll be the first one to tell you that there is a lot of work yet to be done by him and this team as a whole. "And there's no doubt in my mind that he will continue on that path." Vick was due to earn slightly more than $16 million this season after the Eagles designated him the franchise player in February. He'll make a little less, possibly giving the Eagles salary cap flexibility to give Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson an extension. The 31-year-old Vick joined the Eagles in 2009, and played sparingly as the third-string QB behind Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb. He started last year as the backup, but forced his way into the starting role with his exceptional performances after Kolb got hurt in the season opener. Vick guided the Eagles to an 8-3 record in 11 games as a starter in his first season playing full-time since 2006. He set career highs in yards passing (3,018), touchdowns passing (21), touchdowns rushing (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2). Vick also rushed for 676 yards. A Whole Lotta O's According to a source, Michael Vick agreed to a $100 million contract Monday, but it's not the first time he's seen a deal with that many zeroes. Vick, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 draft, once was a megastar with the Atlanta Falcons. He signed a $130 million, 10-year deal in 2005 that made him the top-paid player in the league then. But Vick lost it all when he went to jail and he eventually filed for bankruptcy. He was reviled by fans when he came back, but has won them over with good behavior off the field, a humble attitude and spectacular play. In the September issue of GQ, Vick says that he consulted with commissioner Roger Goodell before signing with Philadelphia. "I think I can say this now, because it's not going to hurt anybody's feelings, and it's the truth," Vick says. "I didn't want to come to Philadelphia. Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options." The article states: "After meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell and other reps from the NFL, Vick was convinced -- and granted league approval -- to sign with Philly." Vick is then quoted saying: "And I commend and thank them, because they put me in the right situation." |

The joke's on Vick -- I've been to Dallas. They almost never lock it. Anybody can get in.

The NFL is full of criminals, starting from the top, down.....Dallas must really be a f'd up place, although Buffalo gave Terrell Owens a key 2 years ago....Just ridiculous....
