We are on a slab so the wood is glued down and would be a bear to replace so we went with a very durable flooring option.

I thought at first that bamboo would be a good way to go but it is way too soft IMHO. Look at the hardness scale!
Strand woven bamboo is much harder than normal bamboo flooring. Most of them have a hardness rating of 2800+. Some much higher, depending on who you ask.

In November of 2011 we changed from carpet to hardwood floors in the family, dinning, living room and in the hall and foyer. Had new carpet put in the bed rooms.

You had carpet in the halls and foyer? Bad idea.

We did have carpet in the hall but not in the foyer. Had vinyl flooring in the foyer.
