Basically Taurus bought Beretta's manufacturing plant in Brazil back 30 years ago or so and have been making the same gun, with minor changes, since. He said that Taurus has a well-deserved reputation for spotty quality but this is a "good Taurus" and that he definitely likes the frame-mounted safety/decocker which is very 1911-ish versus the slide-mounted safety on the Beretta 92. I've never shot either of these, but they are supposedly reliable as all get-out. They make a black version that I would definitely choose over that shiny silver thing.
the G model is a decocker only, not a safety (like the 92FS and M9), so you never have a dead trigger, it's always ready to go.

Based on all these responses, how many of you have actually used it in self defense?

Me? I only have a 12 gauge shot gun in the house, with my old Benjamin .22 caliper pellet rifle that I've had since the 60's when I was a kid. It's a pump model with real wood and made of brass. Still works to this day. Looks like this:

Since retired, haven't at this time. I do go to the range regularly, and I'm amazed at what 42 years of muscle memory range shooting to qualify for duty can do, I'm not as sharp as a tack, but no slouch either.

that's exactly what I have in my nightstand. Bought the G21 from Seasix as a matter of fact. He used to carry it when he was a cop IIRC. Has the same light even, added later. Extra mag also, just in case. My wife has a Ruger PDC-89 with extra mag on her side. I think between us we have about 70 rounds or so. Wife carries a S&W M&P Shield.

I had to have my gun on 4 drunk people trying to get into my house at about 2AM. They ran when i produced the gun, they all went to jail, they had busted into the nearby school and stole a bunch of stuff..

Many years back (mid 70s) I escorted my wife to visit a black friend in the projects. The elevator stopped and 3 big mouth dindos got on and started making extremely lewd comments about my wife. One even said we will let you watch as we do her. and hit the stop button I slid my jacket back and they saw the cocked and locked .45 getting pulled. They started the elevator up again and they got off FAST. Took it back down to ground level and got off. Drove direct to the police station to make a report to cover my ass. She never went near that place again. A short time later her friend moved to a better area!

Of greater concern might be how he's going to get all that powdered sugar and congealed jelly out of the action and serrations.

Actually it was in great shape and looked like it had maybe 1000 rounds though it max, probably more like 400 or so. In other words, barely broke in.

I bought his Glock 17, like new, hardly fired, no traces of Dunkin Dognuts confectionery.

Not "exactly" self defense but safety and self preservation, exactly once.

I used to help my friend Roger Roger at his gun shop in town. Roger had his 1911 A1 on his hip, I had my 1911 A1 in a DeSantis cross draw holster.

Middle aged guy came into the gun shop on a saturday morning and asked to see a particular double barrel shotgun. After making sure it was empty, it was handed to him. He turned towards the front window ( better light ) to check it out.

All of a sudden we heard "plunk,plunk". The store went silent as Roger yelled "One move and you're dead"

I was drawn on him ( safety off ), Roger was on him as were two "regular" customers plus two off duty local police officers.

Luckily for him, he turned slowly with the action still open and said "It's only snap caps".

One of the off duty LEO's was closest to him and grabbed the shotgun out of his hands. He immediately told him he was lucky he didn't get shot as he pointed to the six persons who had drawn on him.

After both LEO's chewed his ass for a bit, Roger told him to leave as he was "too stupid to own a gun and to never come back".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Was I ready at that time? Yes without hesitation if he would have closed the action or turned fast. An instant could have changed the outcome quickly.
Luckily it did not get to that.
It all depends on where I’m going, how I’m dressed, etc. Most often, it’s a Glock 43 in a Milt Sparks VM II or Tulster Holster, however, occasionally, a Glock 30S, or Glock 19/23 in a Milt Sparks VM II or Raven Concealment Holster.
