One time back in the days when we were autocrossing at 411 one of the bartenders was a big "racers aren't athletes, you're doing the same thing you're doing on the street only faster, yadda yadda yadda" types. I finally got sick of it and invited him to ride shotgun the next time.

He came out and rode a lap with me. (I hit him in the helmet with the garage door opener I had forgotten to take off the visor, oops.) He got out, said thanks, got on his Harley, and left.

That evening I go in. Ben asks me "What did you do to Daniel?" I said "Nothing, just took him for a ride at the autocross. Why?"

Ben: "He came in, sat down, and ordered 5 Fireball shots. After he did them he asked if I (Ben) had ever ridden with you (Val)."

Ben: "No, why?"

Daniel: "He took me for a ride on his course today. There was a start, a place where he had to turn left, then right, then left, then right again."

Me, talking to Ben. "Yeah, the first slalom. Know it well."

Daniel to Ben: "He floored it off of the start and went flying at those cones. Right about the time I would have braked......"

Ben to Daniel: "Yeah?"

Daniel: "He shifted into second!"

I love taking passengers. During my time behind the wheel, I've had 3 passengers get sick. Fortunately, every one AFTER they got out of the car.

The day the rental car went to the autocross, I rode with Ken (L98Terror). On the passenger side, it seemed like there was a lot of violence going on. At the end of the run, Ken reported that that was his best time of the day, due the extra ballast keeping the passenger side rear wheel on the ground.

I did not want to get sick.

That was a fun day. I did pretty well in that stupid little tiny Nissan. 1/3 the hp of most of the other cars there and still finished pretty high in the results. NOISY, shitty street tires. I Even rotated the tires from front to back due to extreme tire wear.

Ballast....

that's an unfortunate nickname. it implies that you just sit there, not doing anything, and the only thing that matters is your weight.

ah yes.... i remember reading guys, long, long ago, who took out the honeycomb mesh in the intake, and they swore they could feel the increase HP in the seat of their pants. until the computer started throwing codes because it could not accurately measure the airflow, because some idiot took out the honeycomb mesh which straightened the airflow so it could be accurately measured.
