Help pick my next rifle...
I am looking for something new (to me). I prefer to stay in the realm of military type of rifles, preferably American this time and am looking at something in 7.62x51 (.308) although I could be swayed from that. I've always wanted an M1A. My first rifle qual was with an M14. It would be a nice compliment to the Garands and the m1903. The downer there is that while my '03 and Garand actually have history, you of course can't buy a MILSURP M14 so even with all of the hardware that is available, it would at best be "close" but not quite. I'm shying away from the AR-10 at the moment simply because I have a hell of a lot of AR based rifles and want to try something different.
Since a really good "sniper" platform is out of the current budget I've been looking at the various Remington 700 variants. A 700P with some goodies can make a hell of a nice rifle that can reach out and touch something from a long way away. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery? A note for Canadians: Why would I want such an evil device? Because I f**king can. |

I considered the Remington 700. But ended up with a Kimber.

Defective products happen. I understand that sometimes something gets out that's less than perfect more than anybody. Hell, I'm a quality engineer. It's what I do every day. I can live with that, but when it comes to customer service, I hold grudges. Kimber is on my "Will not buy" list at the moment. |

I too, qualified with the M14 and it was love at first shot. Next best thing(for me anyway), to MILSURP was Springfield Armory M1A
and after a lot of reading, stare and compare, I chose the SuperMatch version. 1/2 minute angle hooded rotational rear sight, bedded heavier stock, NM sights(.062 post) and air gauged premium blued barrel. That was about 7 years ago but today's Super Match is with a stainless Douglas barrel. The heavier stock is nice for the range but I picked a Viet Nam Era MILSURP synthetic stock(brownish with the cutout for selector) and bedded that to my receiver. Now I can have a stock for range and one lighter one for field. I love this rifle! Today's specs: http://www.springfield-armory.com/wp.../03/SA9802.pdf |

I really want a .300 blk SBR with a silencer.

Look at the Ruger American. Huge bang for the buck, no pun intended. I have to leave for work, but if I can think about it, I'll send you an email with some good info.

The 1918A3 is awesome. I really might add that to the list of things to start saving for. The fact that it is built with USGI parts puts it at a new level. I have been lucky enough to get to put a lot of rounds downrange through some of the most amazing weapons in existence. There is absolutely nothing that I love to shoot more than the 240. Of course if I spent $13k+ on (a semi-auto version of) it, the first round would be AT me as I ran away from my wife. Still what I'm leaning towards for the NEXT purchase although I am going to check out some of what has been put up here. Keep 'em coming! |
