My Mom was president of the southeast charter of the BMIFC. This enabled her to meet Mr Manilow along with Bette Midler, Jerry Garcia, Debbie Reynolds, Steven Tyler, Brian May and many others (yes, they all went to his concerts). She was actually on a first name basis with Manilow and Midler. The club flew her out to San Diego once to be on a talk show a few years ago.
To his fans he was nothing but gracious and the ultimate showman. Mom got my brother and I along with our wives to go to a concert back in the nineties. While not my style I admit there are a few of his I like and he did have a few songs that are truly beautiful. "Mandy" was originally written as "Brandi" but the group Looking Glass released their song first so it was changed. Dale Earnhardt, Jr stated in an interview that "Weekend in New England" was on his personal playlist. It is the song I chose to close her funeral service with.

Did everyone know he was gay? Well, most suspected but he did try to keep it hidden from the general public. Image concerns, I guess. At his age now I guess it no longer matters.
