Rolling Mill sold
After 4 grueling months of preparing, planning and strategizing, our Rolling Mill sold to Kaiser Aluminum on Thursday. What a roller coaster ride this has been. From the chain link fence separating the two parts of the integrated plant, to last minute separation of utilities, to quick installs of power meters and scrambles to figure out how to get material into our plant. What an absolute nightmare I hope not to ever do again.
They sent an announcement out letting everyone know our new Lead Team for the Smelter and Power plant. My job description looked like something out of a horror movie, Maintenance Manager for Carbon Plant, Aluminum Plant, High Voltage, Transportation shop, Store Room, Grounds, Railroads, Contracting out and Utilities. Went from 14 Salary and 73 hourly to 18 Salary and 103 hourly report. I did get a promotion but the added responsibilities are sort of numbing. Just got to hang in another year and then pull the rip cord. Should have the new house paid for, cars paid for and enough nest egg to settle into a less stressful job for a few years before hitting the age of Social Security. |

The ball is in our court so to speak. We are a 61 year old Smelter competing with much newer technology within our own company. We control our own destiny, if we make good metal, deliver on time and keep the place cost effective, we will be around for a while. The big scare is coming into the summer months were all hell breaks loose every year. It is difficult to find help who want to work in a high labor, high heat area. Now we have the hurdle on people being in the pot rooms for the long haul. In the past they could come in and eventually transfer to the rolling side. Now all they have are the pot rooms or the carbon plant, both of which are labor intensive.

Sounds like you have a good plan. I retired debt free after downsizing and moving close to the grandkids. I never looked back.
