REI (caution: many libs there) carries DEET purer than the one you have depicted. It has always worked well for me. But I can't say regarding the 4% "other isomers" in product you posted.

Is there any...ANY biological or environmental need or purpose for mosquitos?

What is their role in the world?

Serious question, because I truly don't know. I suspect that in a similar way that they spread disease, maybe they also spread immunity, but I really don't know if that is possible.
