Default City's police will now earn the wage of McDonald's cashiers

Police and firefighters in Scranton, Pa., will now earn the same wage as McDonald's employees. In accordance with a contentious move by Mayor Chris Doherty to slash the city budget, the salaries of almost 400 workers have been unilaterally reduced to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour for an "indefinite" period, down from their previous pay between $19 and $36 an hour. The new pay changes went into effect Friday, and the government employee's union has filed a lawsuit. Sure, carrying firearms, running into burning buildings and saving lives involves a wee bit more training than, say, pushing fries around a deep fryer; but times are tough, the mayor says.

So he's going to cut his wage to the fed minimum too? Sweet. Oh, no?

Doherty was elected to a third term in November 2009.

He was elected President of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities (PLCM) in 2006. In 2008, Doherty received the PLCM Distinguished Community Service Award, the Local Government Award for Excellence, and was inducted into the Keystone Society for Tourism.

"Having grown up here in Scranton as one of 11 kids and now raising six kids of my own, I’ve long been committed to making this the best possible place for raising a family...”

Doherty was recognized by the United States Conference of Mayors in 2008 for his efforts to protect the City’s tree canopy. In addition, he serves as a member of the steering committee for the Mayor’s Innovation Project, a learning network of America’s mayors dedicated to efficient government.

He and his wife, Donna, have six children. His great-great grandfather, Hughie Jennings is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Doherty also stated during the 2001 campaign, “you can't be spending any more money than you bring in.” He hasn’t ever really taken his own advice.

The Pennsylvania Economy League (PEL), acting in their capacity as the city’s appointed Act 47 coordinator, released a revised recovery plan dated 3/27/2012. The findings of the recovery plan have been largely unreported.

For example, as of 1 January 2012, the City of Scranton’s long term debt was $122,080,101.5 According to the last census, 76,089 people lived in the Electric City – so each of them owes $1,604.43 for Doherty’s long-term debt.

Scranton guarantees the debt of the Scranton Parking Authority which currently owes at least $95.6 million. That means each resident of the city also owes an additional $1,256.42 for the excesses of this authority whose members are appointed by one person, Chris Doherty.

So, to square just the debt mentioned above, every Scrantonian would have to cut a check for $2,860.85 to the city. And not everyone household, that’s every man, woman and child that lives in the city. Family of four? Your share is $11,443.40.

The democratic leadership in the City of Scranton has financially destroyed the city as they have in 12 other cities under a distressed designation. Yes, the mayor of every distressed city in the Commonwealth is a Democrat.

Scranton, like the other distressed cities spanning Penn’s Woods, have a choice ahead of them. Many will get the chance to make this critical choice next year. They can continue to embrace the Democratic policies and politicians that have destroyed them or start electing Republicans. And please, not just any person with an R after their name. They should elect Republicans that will not raise taxes, will not increase spending, and will not sacrifice the children of their community on an altar of debt. Republicans, who understand how to grow their city out of debt and have a plan to do it.

Scranton, you have kicked the can down the road long enough. If you want leaders that will lead, start electing them. Otherwise, you have no one to blame but yourself for the situation you are in.

So he's showing in his own way ( no matter how whacked it is ) a little bit financial responsibility. Can they slash the teachers pay next?

Unlike the chief bonehead, he can't print money to cover his over the top spending

Lets be honest....

If your house catches fire... most likely the fire fighters will be there to ensure that the neighboring houses don't also catch on fire. I would say most house fires that warrant the fire department end up with a condemned house.

no need for the police, PA is an Open carry and concealed carry state. A Majority of police work is to oppress and generate revenue not to serve and protect.

besides it is scranton... old mining/factory town.

Scranton...speaking as someone who lived in PA for more than 40 years, not much more needs to be said. One of the true shizhole towns in the state

First, If I was him I'd watch my back! Fooling with one's livelihood so drastically is fooling with families, and people get shot.

Second, pretty easy to see a mass exodus of those guys to other towns where they're appreciated for risking their lives.
