Thumbs up The Mojave Mile, Mar 6, 2010 - interest check: Wanna do 150 mph legally?

Cliff notes:

Event location: Mojave Air and Space Port, Mojave, CA

Event date: Saturday, Mar 6, 2010

One mile speed run on a 12,000 ft long, 200 ft wide airport runway.
150 vehicles (cars, bikes, etc), 3 runs each.

This event is not finalized, but once it is firmed up, I suspect that the 150 spaces will fill up quickly.

There is more information on the CF (C6 gen) from the event organizer. And at.....

Mojave Mile: The Fastest Mile in the West (Placeholder URL, no info there yet).

The Mojave Mile • View topic - Let's Get This Show On The Road (forum - scroll down to Mike Borders post).

I intend to participate, representing the Vette Barn 150 MPH Team, SoCal Division

I have no clue yet as to event entry fees, but thought that it would be better to start the thread with incomplete information, than after the event sold out.

We can start regional threads for Barn Teams later, if the interest is strong!

Interest?

Default Hello

Just a quick note. Just joined on Icedancer's invite. He seems to have covered the general info of this event. I have ran many Open Road Racing events with this Group. This will be their second 1 mile shootout event. For more info on Open Road Racing:

OpenRoadRacing

They are a fun group that makes you feel like family and have safty as their highest concern.

Thanks for accepting the invite Jeffy' !

March 6 is not far off, and March in the Mojave Desert is a great time for this event.

I attended Spring Mountain Advanced Driving School lvl 1 in Mar 2006, and lvl 2 in Mar 2007.
The weather was perfect both years.

Count me in for the Shootout with both Corvettes, even if I have to scrounge a driver for the 2001 coupe.
Maybe I can talk TRAYC6 and Ernie into flying out and running the C5!

There is a list posted of those that have contacted MKM about this event. Check list at:

If you are not there and would like to be contact MKM. This does not mean you need to send money yet, just get you more info and reserve a spot.

Default Interesting rule update

I noticed on the cover page of the entry forms that there is a way to up your top speeds for this event. They talked about "qualifying " runs. So I as Mike from MKM if someone with a basic/rookie level licence but a car that could go over 150 with ease could work up to a faster top speed with each run? here is his answer:

Essentially, yes. People without any racing experience will get our Basic license which will let them go up to 150 mph. Once they make a run between 140 and 150 mph, they can "upgrade" their license for a Sportsman License permitting speeds up to 190 mph. To get an Unlimited license, they would have to complete a run in the 180-190 mph range.

A lot of different types of experience will qualify a driver for the Sportsman or higher license right off the bat. Your ORR experience, for example, qualifies you for an Unlimited license. Land Speed, drag racing (if high enough speeds were reached), racing courses and schools, and other activities may also qualify.

Licenses on the day will de documented by wristbands. If you upgrade, you will go to Scoring where you can get the proper wristband for your new license. Wristbands and car speed limits will be checked at the line. Speed violations (breakouts) will receive no score, no timing slip, and a warning.

It is important to note that both the drivers/riders and the cars/bikes will be rated separately as to what speeds they can go. For example, a new racer might bring out a twin-turbo Callaway (!) with all of the proper safety equipment for the Unlimited class. The car would be teched to go Unlimited, but the top speed permitted by this pairing would be 150 mph on the first pass and 190 on the second pass before the driver is permitted to go all out.

After the first few events, we expect to see fewer and fewer people with just the Basic license, as everyone gains experience. Rookies, of course, will always have to go through this gate.

I hope that explains everything.
Mike

Default Almost ready

I have paperwork and money in. Now I just need to get the car finished. Short block got back from machine shop Tuesday, it is mostly back in as of Friday. Heads are yet to come back and the turbos are not on ( These are a ***** to do. You can only turn the mounting bolts about an 1/8th of a turn at a time, that is with the custom wrenchs my mechanic has made. He feels good that it will be ready, but as always it will come down to the last second.

my best run was 151.7 mph in a stock 2010 Grand Sport MN6.

Altitude approx 2800 ft, air density equivalency reported at 3800-4200 ft.
Cloudy and cool, very brief light rain late morning.

About 100 participants, no injuries or major mechanical failures.

The event was well organized and well managed.
The organizer announced intentions for a 2-day repeat in early October.

Participants included MANY Corvettes, a dozen or more Ford GTs, a few Porsches and a 1958 Volkswagon.
A beautifully restored 1936 Indian motorcyle, a dozen+ street bikes, and a few racing bikes and race cars rounded out the field.

A few of the bikes with NOS were trapping just a hair short of the 200 mph mark.

LS3s were trapping the mile in the mid 150s, Z06s were in the 165 range, and the new ZR-1s were hitting close to 180.

That is awesome to see you motor your GS at a mile event and less than three weeks until I put the boosted C5 through the Texas Mile hoping for 190+

The video DVD will be a few weeks before I have it from the event videographer.

Here are some random shots a friend took with my pocket camera.

The runway shot and the 143.7 mph board are from my first run.
Successive runs were 149.2, 149.5, 151.7

Default My Report

Well I ran the Mojave Mile Shootout yesterday. I had a great time but did not run as fast as I had hoped, I only hit 173mph. My car still needs a bit more fine tuning. I would get off the line and my car would pull hard then when you hit 4k rpm the turbos would hit 13lbs boost and I would have to lift a little to keep some traction. Then hammer it to 6k and shift, this is where I have my issue as I shift to 2nd the car would fall on it's face no power to get past it I would have to short shift to 3rd then things seemed to be fine. I just lost a lot of time and power doing this. Anyway my mechanic and tuner have some ideas and will make it better.
I took some pictures, but don't have a web host so I am posting a link of another guys pictures but he give a good cross section of the cars there. Lots of Vettes and GT-40's. The red 69 Camaro was the fastest at 200.7mph he was packing 1100hp. Also notice an old pick-up truck it is a 36 Hudson with a huge diesel motor in it. It has gone over 200mph on the salt flats. He was having some issues and was only in the 150mph range at this event.

Mojave Mile 2010 pictures from cars photos on webshots

Jeffy'

Let me add we had the world record land speed holder for 1300cc all stock VW's it was a 58 with 36rwhp. He set a blistering 71.8mph in the mile which was just short of his record of 73.2mph
