Lawn Mower Advice sought
Toro 22" Recycler with the Briggs & Stratton engine. Seemed like it has been losing power lately, and today I couldn't get it started. A shot of starting fluid, and it ran like a champ for a few seconds, and died. There was gas in the bowl, and the main jet looked fine, but I shot it with carb cleaner and used a wire to clean out the holes I could see. Put it back together, started on the first pull, and ran like a champ for maybe 3-4 minutes before sounding like a wind up toy running out of wind.
My guess is there was a chunk of shit in that jet, so it ran when I cleaned it out, but that there must be more shit in the carb such that it clogged again right away. Does that sound reasonable? I'm thinking I have to take the carb off and disassemble and clean the whole thing? Suggestions welcome. Thanks. Edited to add: I used the Google machine, and it basically said to clean the main jet like I already had. |

I had to change the belt at the beginning of the season, so all gas and oil was removed from the machine a few weeks ago. Fresh gas was added to the tank that I just bought a week or so ago. The bowl emptied itself when I removed the main jet.

I always go with the motto,
Clean carb twice, Cut once. Hope this helps! Edit: Sounds like the OP has some trash in the fuel tank that is getting sucked into the carb. |

I had to do the same on my generator when we had some tornados knock the power out for a week. Sitting in the pitch black with a flashlight held in my mouth while disassembling and cleaning a carb was a pain in the ass. Uhh..... I need to go check that Generator, don't want to go through that again. |

This thing has done 7 full seasons, which is about when I walk them to the curb. But we are talking about moving in the next 2 years, hence the desire to not buy a new one. Changing the belt was kind of a pain, but only cost $15 to fix that. Upon fixing it, I realized one of the rear wheels was beat, easy fix, but cost me $35 for the wheels. When my wife got home last night, I was in the garage working on the carb, and she was asking what I was doing etc. and I said "you know how you ask me why I just walk these things to the curb every 7 or 8 years? THIS is why." It's basically cheap Chinese garbage and 7-8 seasons is about all they last before they become a complete pain in the ass. This one has reached pain in the ass stage. |

I took the carb off, and it looked remarkably clean inside. The fuel line was clean too. I did the normal stuff of running a piece of wire down all the holes I could find, and didn't really find much interesting at all. I did see one tiny chunk of black shit fall out of somewhere, and thought "maybe that was it". Put the machine back together, one pull, cut the back yard.
Thanks for the advice! |

Prepare for next time. Get a spray can of Berkebile Carb Cleaner ( might be berkebile gum cutter)
Best carb cleaner you can get. It doesn't take much to screw up a carb. that "little black spec" caused your frustration |

It takes both an invested community (Cub Forums, Car Forums etc) and a certain set of skills (like having a master machinist with a pretty nice shop; or some determined fool with a portable carport and a well house packed with tools) to keep the good old stuff running. I hope we all have shared enough with some younger enthusiasts to keep the flame alive! |
