We aren't disagreeing here. This ship was leaving port, so it would have had tugs guiding it out of it's berth, with the harbor pilot(s) on the bridge of the ship. I'm just saying, had the tugs stayed with the ship until it got centered and facing properly in the channel, and past the bridge, this would have been prevented.

I know little, but think standard procedures is that the tugs disengage at a point prior to passing under the bridge, unless they are told there is a problem.

Again, I know little, I am sure in 10 years when the feds release the report, we will know about 10% of what really happened.

Default Obviously the Captain of the ship...

Has never seen this video. Ok it takes place on land, but it still involves bridges. It's classic, and should be enjoyed with beer...

A tad bit lower PSI would have saved some of those box trucks.

I never damaged a trailer under a bridge, but ya gotta love the full crinkle wrinkle can opener roof peel backs! It's awesome. If you ever want to give someone a gift and don't know what to get them... give them the 11 foot 8 link. It will make anyone laugh.

I wonder if the ship's horn worked at all when they lost power. Apparently, they had some kind of power to notify someone affiliated with the bridge operation by radio, as I'm reading it's a toll bridge and the toll booth attendants halted traffic from entering. I'm assuming the ship's horn is air powered, so was there a compressed air tank that could have powered the horn to warn those on the bridge, or was the whole system the equivalent of drive by wire, so no power, no way to activate the horn?

I know we have quite a few ex Navy folks here. How does all this work?

It's probably air powered but with a solenoid to release air on demand for signaling. no power = no solenoid.

Not likely that there's a pull lanyard like on a road tractor.

I find it hard to believe that the bridge foundations were not better protected. Compared to the cost of that superstructure, a bit of sheet piling and rock would have been very little.

They were having electrical issues and radioed ahead that they were getting out of shape. SOP is to lock it down if there are any ailing vessels.

I watched the long version of the video. It looks like the only cars on the bridge was the work crew.

They said they had stopped almost all the traffic but how in the world did the work crews not notice/get a call, etc...I imagine even while it had power it had a horn.

I have no intention of plummeting into the river, but if I did, my Stihl would be with me.

Instead of buying houses for illegals, we should be spending money on putting concrete borders and concrete islands for alignment.
It is not cost possible to upgrade all bridges and / or make spans wider, so this is a MUCH, MUCH cheaper alternative.
As you all know, I am a part-time sometimes engineer, in all engineering fields, so do not question my inputs.

Here is the new Skyway Bridge, it is nearly impossible for a ship to hit the bridge:

If you stopped hoarding all the rocks for your driveway they could have made the improvements to the bridge

No train tracks on that bridge, but OK, sure, Jan.
