Any Slot Car fans?
I still have my slot car that I used in the mid 70's, but these cars are insane.

I had a slot car set when I was a kid. After watching that video, though, I'd swear my old set was more fun.

They put little stickers on top of the car body - color matched to the track lane - so they know which lane to put them back in.

I had 6 slot cars in the late 60's and there was several places you could go to race. But by the early 70's the places were gone.

I saw an awesome setup/club place for slot cars around 1970 or so. Told my dad that I had "my heart set on that." Usually he was pretty OK with indulging my more reasonable requests like "can I have that bike?" or "a model rocket would be cool" but he just said "No. Period. No."

I still have three complete A/FX tracks. Darlington, Riverside, and can't remember the other. Still got maybe fifty cars from the mid sixties to the late 70's. Picked up a few newer NASCARs at yard sales. Been thinking of getting them out for the grandkids. Last time they were run was when my kids were young (about '95). Got these in a display case.

I raced mine back in 60's and 70's. Slow enough to track and tell when to hit
the brakes but fast enough to go airborne in a curve. More of real seat of the pants driving than watching blazes of lights flash by! The old speeds were more realistic of real life and were fun to watch as they were models of actual makes and identifiable as such on the track! |

Had a Marx set in the very early 60s and later a nice Strombecker set. Still have the latter. Raced a lot at commercial tracks in the late 80s and well into the 90s and even built a nice 3 lane routed track out of MDF for the garage. It's gone now but would like to build another at some point.

There are many slower classes that are more fun to race IMO. The open class cars are just a blur. Pretty amazing tech, but I was never too interested in participating.

We had I guess you would say "Neighborhood HO Scale racing" back in the late 60's. That was good.

We used to take aluminum foil and mold it over the bodies, cut out the wheel wells and use a marker to color in the windows and put numbers on. Gently peel them off and use a thin strip of scotch tape to run under the chassis to hold them on. You had to be really careful driving because when a wreck occurred it did real damage to the body like a real car. Crunched front ends, fenders, and quarter panels and if it flipped the roof was crushed. A little touch of realism.
The Hot Wheels jumps and lighter fluid is a story for another time... |

If anyone recognizes these, then they know how many years ago I was into HO slot cars. My thumbs got blisters on them from pushing on those little buttons for hours.
My mom gave all my HO slot stuff away (boy do I wish she hadn't now) but since kids and grandkids have come along I've got a new stash of HO stuff. I keep a small track on the fireplace mantle in the basement for the kids to play with. |
