There's a nice '90 ZR-1 on a Mecum On line auction right now, that ends today, and it's at $37k. Looks like as rare as they are, the value is not super- duper high.
I would have thought over 100k, but the '90-'95's seem to trade for 30-40k.
I agree with making the kid pay for it.

I wrecked two cars that belonged to my parents.

The one that was totaled, was not my fault. The one with the "impact modified" fender, was my fault. My dad's 64 Cadillac. I hit a fire hydrant taking a turn too fast.

In a panic, I came home and took the fender off and tried to hammer it back to good. He said I'd have done better to have left it alone.

45 years ago I worked with a cool guy named Jim who was ab6 years older than I. He told me when he was a kid in Missouri in the '60's, he'd 'borrow' his dad's new Chrysler Imperial to deliver the Sunday papers for his paper route, because they were heavy and the car was fun to zoom around in. One morning, he was chasing a raccoon down a divider with tall grass or brush growing in it, and ran it right into a tree stump that was hidden in the grass. The impact stopped the car. Front end was caved in. He said when he pulled it into the driveway, erupting coolant, his dad was standing there with a baseball bat waiting for him. I don't think he used the bat, but the old man beat Jim's ass badly. On the bright side, that never happened again.

There are some pretty harsh responses in here. No idea how old the kid is.

Point is, he did something stupid and got caught in the form of an accident. Glad he's ok and how he has to pay the piper. Cars can be replaced. No car is worth more than a son.

How many of us have done extremely stupid things in our life that just happened to work out in our favor? I did...a lot more than once.

Grace is lacking in this world anymore...

Bad to hear. Glad the boy's okay though.

I don't let kids play with my toys for that reason.

Telling a kid that you're very disappointed in them is worse than an ass whooping.

Tough lesson for the boy. Glad he's ok, that was a hell of an impact.

In all candor, I've learned a couple tough lessons like that myself in my hooligan past.

How do you replace a ZR-1 in that color? Not too many out there.

Dude - you're heard of the McLaren F1, right?

The best part about us doing stupid shit (like driving your twin turbo at felony speeds) is that there were no cameras to record it! Kids today can't let a fart without it being plastered all over the ****ing internet, so they stare at their ****ing phone.

At least Jim's son was doing something! It's something!

How so? The boy hasn't had any consequences. Dad had to drive for hours and use his own fuel to pick up the body parts. Dad has to do all the leg work and research. Dad is doing all the rebuilding work and paying for it.
Dad is a doormat.
The kid might feel bad, but that's it. Dad, like always, will take care of it for him. No lessons learned here, IMO.

I'm inclined to agree. As a teen, my dad would make sure payment was made in sweat, effort, chores, loneliness, allowance, paycheck, or any asset I had.

By the time that car was rolling, I would be so intimate with how it was repaired that I'd have nightmares about it. I'd know how to do everything that it needed, over and over until it was done right.

Interest on it all would be 300% and I probably wouldn't get to drive again until I had my own car and home.
