That didn't make you guys immune to accidents.

Three years later, on May 27, 1968, the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Scorpion (SSN-589) suffered an accident and sank with all 99 men on board in the Atlantic Ocean approximately 644 kilometers (400 miles) southwest of the Azores. The Department of Defense in 1981 mentioned a nuclear weapons accident occurred in the Atlantic in the spring of 1968 but continues to classify the details. It is thought that two nuclear ASTOR torpedoes were on board the Scorpion when it sank.

Interesting read. People don't realize what's out there.

Neither the Scorpion or the Thresher, both nuke subs, went down because of an accident with nuke weapons.

The nuclear-capable USS Caron (DD-970) and USS Yorktown (CG-48) are bumped by Soviet frigates during Freedom of Navigation operations inside Soviet territorial waters on February 12, 1988. For a video of the Caron collision, see here, and the Yorktown collision,
I don't suppose you ever dealt with the Soviets interfering with your unreps. I'm sure you may have some more harrowing stories though.

Tell me what ship has gone down due to a nuke accident? That isn't my point.

Looks like a U.S. sub may have been a target here.

Trying to "bump" subs underwater is too stupid for even the Soviets to attempt.

We lost two nuke subs early on in the program. Soviets have lost five that we know of, including one in August 2000. I've never been on or near a Soviet nuke sub, but have heard that crew safety isn't very high on their priority list and that the radiation levels inside can be dangerously high compared to U.S. nuke subs.

Holy chit. I did not think the number of nukes was that high at the time. Makes you wonder about today huh?

What that article and chart don't address is that the yield of nuke weapons has increased more than the number of them has decreased. The size of them has shrunk significantly as the yield has increased. The ones dropped on Japan are tiny compared to what's out there now.

If man can find better ways to kill more people they'll build them. That's been proven for millennia.

I was here for this incident back in 86. The pics are from my Squadron.

The Missing Nuclear Weapons Lost Off The Coast Of Bermuda. In October of 1986 a 667-A project Yankee class submarine, K219, belonging to the Soviet Union was on a routine patrol of the waters off the coast of Bermuda when it was damaged and inevitably sank eighteen thousand feet under the sea.

Sure I know they are more powerful since those days. Just did not know the quantity deployed during those times. Army special weapons and types while I was in 83-89 did not seem to be in those quantities or more than likely I did not know or ask

And for better or worse it has driven all types of innovation and technological advancement. I hate to say it but we'd probably all still be wearing fig leaves if we didn't have to learn to kill the other guy.
