Paid off mortgage. Do you file paperwork with county?

According to my wife, who takes care of all our household bill paying requirements. She just sent the mortgage company our final payment, about 14 years earlier than our initial mortgage was scheduled to be paid.



Here's my question. How do I prove that there is no lien on the property?

The reason I ask is due to a situation I had with my HD motorcycle and having to prove the loan was satisfied when I tried to trade it in and found that I lost the title. In that case I had to get the loan company to send me a statement showing the loan had been satisfied. Then present that to the DMV so they would issue a new title.

In the case of a house and property is this lien on file with the county? If so should I bring the paperwork the mortgage company sends me showing the loan is satisfied to the county records and have them update their files?
I'd hate to lose that paperwork and then be unable to prove it was free and clear.

Anyone have any advice or experience with this?

Paid off, never got paper from/ to county. That’s what mortgage ins is for when ya bought house I thought

If you go to sell the place, you're attorney will need the paperwork to prove that it is paid off.
Let him worry about the rest.

I would think the Title Company would verify ownership when the house is sold.

The SoM should be forwarded to you by the county but if they don’t have your current mailing address you might not get it.

You should verify the satisfaction of mortgage has been recorded independently.

Mortgage companies can be slow about this, may take 30-60 days for them to file stuffs.

My experience paying off the loans on 3 houses is pretty close to this. The lender has always submitted a release of lien to the county. The lender has never sent me a "Satisfaction of Mortgage" or anything like that, just the last statement showing a zero balance, and the county has never sent me anything either. But all three times, I could go on to the County Clerk's website and print out a copy of the lien release just for my records. The one property I sold, the title company got the lien release from the County Clerk, so I didn't have to produce my copy of it.

Basically, unless your lender screws up, it's kind of a nothing.

This. 100%. Always verify, don't assume. I also go on my county's website every so often and make sure it's still free and clear.
