Default Dumping slag at Bethlehem Steel in 1994

It's been just over 20 years since Bethlehem Steel last poured steel. ( Nov 1995 ). Here's slag being poured out of rail cars.

I pretty sure I have posted before about my Bemidji Minn. trip with the folks back over 1/2 a century ago.....the iron trains, unloading 'dock' way in hell outta the lake, and the short gray cars full of iron ore.......

Carnegie knew how to get shit done......

So when the fire the furnaces up they melting the brown rust outta the 'ore'....and the rest is super hot stone/crap.....so it has to be hauled out of the plants and dumped....it's pretty much nothing but sand/related stone crap..... the iron is ours to make Corvettes with......

The Bethlehem Steel story is an interesting one. There's a lot of parallels to the auto industry in what happened to them. Conventional wisdom blames the unions in both cases and while that is true, it's only part of the story.

It's the impurities that are removed during the smelting process.

Cheap imports ( foreign govt subsidized ) were part of the decline in both industries.
